If you spend a lot of time on race gas or E-85, get the ACT Extreme pressure plate (3200) with the solid hub organic disc. It is streetable for stop and go traffic but with the stronger hub it will last mechanically. You will still need to respect the heat limits of an organic disc. But as you found out the spendy fashion twin discs have the same heat limits. If you launch, let things cool down considerably before doing it again.

A Twin disk feels about a thousand time better then the ACT and Launches MUCH easier..

Fashion Twin disk
you get what you pay for in a Twin Disk..

It only happens when I launch the car. I'm wondering, after less than 500 miles, is it broken-in or broken?

Your clutch has less than 500 miles and you are launching on it?

Yeah definitely bring your car in to a evo shop or dealership if its covered. Clutches on the evos is the weakest link and will go bad, be careful about draggging this car it will break fast on you.

I would think launching on a new clutch is not a good way to break it in?

What is a good break in time?

A new clutch actually holds great. It is pretty much ready for full power in a roll on situation. But the disc is not fully hardened. If you launch on it or make too much heat too soon the resins holding the fibers together will come apart and just turn into fibers. You need to drive it some to fully cook it and put a more tempered finish on the disc.

You are trying to make a little heat over a period of time. Every time you slip the clutch from a stop, in traffic and parking you make a little heat. This heat cooks the resins and fibers in the street disc to their final hardened state.

No launching or speed shifting untill you have it broken in. Also be careful up steep driveways or loading onto a trailer or dyno ramps. If you smell clutch, you done screwed up. Drive like your mom is in the car with you for the first week os so, then like your dad is in the car with you for the next week or so. You hear the general recomendation for 500 miles a lot. This assumes a normal mix of driving. Driving to Vegas and back does not really count since you are just blasting up the 15 in 5th gear.
