If you are a baller, there is a 76 by my house that sells 100 octane but it has been 7.99 a gallon for the last 3 months. It is on Arroyo Seco right when you get off the 110.

I personally use that station and every once in awhile I will get some of that stuff or I will mix a little in.

I also heard it is good to mix it up here and there, so I also go to Mobil sometimes.

You can use any gas you want. All the gas everywhere pretty much comes from the same damn source so theres nothing special. Theres a 76 by me that was getting filled up by a tanker.. then the tanker goes down the street to Arco and fills them up...

No one has had a problem with a stock car filling up anywhere.

is that safe to do on a car only with intake and exhaust?Â* and where is arroy seco?Â* i live in hawthorne.

If the car isn't tuned for 100, I think you will not get a noticeable gain. Â*I just do it because I think it cleans out the system and I think the car runs better on 100 but all that might be BS. Â*I swear it feels better but not when you get your bank statement...LOL.

A lot of Porsche dudes will be there, and I have seen a coupe ferraris and lambos filling up there, we talked and we all agreed that we have no idea if it is really worth it but it feels good.

In any case, it is safe. Â*I mean, you could also just pour octane booster in your tank or something.

There is a thread on here for all the places that sell "racing gas"

I heard techron is not good on the dyno for turbo cars but it is a total rumor and I have never seen any dyno sheets that say that. My friend who has an IX claims you lose like 10hp but I still go there if I have to and cannot tell the difference.

Also, isn't ARCO bad gas? I have heard that ARCO/AMPM is a no go for turbo cars and EVOs...

I only use 76 and then Mobil to change up because I believe old wives tales. I am pretty gullible. In Junior High friend's mom told me that if you let hot water beat on your head for too long in the shower, you will go bald while pointing at her bald son who was in his early 20s. She told me this in Jr. High and I avoided hot water on my hairline until college...LOL. I am stupid.

interesting I though chevron was good gas??...thats what I always pump in my evo all the time....maybe i should switch to 76 now.....does anybody have any proof that chevron wit techron really make you lose power???

its probably bullshit. Unless I see dynos, I will still use chevron if I have to.

sorry i didnt see this was already discussed. the reason i asked is because i used to have a 2004 ralliart tuned by rrm, when i would put regular it would run like crap. when i used premium it would run way better. i wasnt sure if different companys use different octanes. please delete if you want. i was just curious.

I was only giving you links because I had read all these to try to see if the chevron thing was a myth when I got my EVO.

not all gas come from the same place and they all have different amount of additives.

Actually there is a difference, the detergent/additive package is all that really seperates one fuel from another.

from a discussion i just had on another forum

"If all fuels were the same GM, BMW, Honda, etc wouldnt have gotten together and developed the Top Tier fuel standard that requires more detergents than the government does. And every fuel out there would pass the Top Tier standards, but they dont....... notable exclusions from the Top Tier fuel supplier list are Sunoco-USA, Exxon-Mobil, BP/Amoco, Valero, Flying J, Gulf, Hess, Lukoil, Marathon."

odd one of the top tuners here on the boards says shell isn't that great cause he sees that it causes more knock than 76 or mobil gas when hes tuning on the dyno

And just because it says 76 on the station doesnt mean that they sell Conoco Phillips Gas. Most of them are individually owned and buy gas from whomever they want and most of the time they buy the cheapest source.

just so you know Top Tier isnt a ranking, its a level of additives, you either exceed the levels and are listed as Top Tier, or you dont have enough and you dont make the list. whether individually owned or not they are still forced to uphold a certain standard for that advertised brand of fuel.

plain and simple, it's all in what your looking for. and if someone doesnt wanna believe the facts than i'm not here to force it on them, this IS just an internet forum where people go to help other people. it wasnt an argument,Â* if people do the maintenance on their cars then theirs nothin to worry about. /facts.

To the OP: Please do NOT fill 100 octane gas and show up for your tune on Friday unless of course you want a 100 octane gas tune. But if I tune the car on 100 octane, then you cannot run 91 octane.

I recommend 91 octane 76 gas to all my customers.

I'm not sure why, but I get the best mileage with Chevron gas, this has been true for like the last 6 cars I've driven, so good enough for me.Â* Literally a 20-40miles per tank difference compared to using say 76 or Costco gas.Â* I felt the most power in the Evo with Costco gas..though!!

MitsEvoIX
07-06-2009, 02:38 PM
I don't know why but for my ix I get better gas mileage when I use 76, and bad gas mileage when I go with shell. Â*A full tank of 76 gas would get me about 220+, and a full tank of shell gas would get me only about 190-200 miles.

I second what Massimo is saying to a degree. Yes gas companies differ from the additives that are in the gasoline, this is true. If that is the measurement, then essentially 91 is 91 no matter where you go. The only difference is the additives. Assuming this you could counter balance with some kind of fuel additive.

An interesting note is this. All of our local refineries go through shutdown periods. During these times the entire operations of the plant is shut down and a team of specialist come in to test and measure anything and everything, from radiation levels to chemical levels, tank thickness, welds on flanges, everything. During this time which can last several days, the gas stations need gas, so where do they get it from? They buy it from another refinery. So sometimes when you're filling up at chevron there might be some Exxon mobile in there. I know this because a lot of guys in my family worked for the inspection companies that go into the refinery. PTS and Iesco.

With all that said, I do stay away from ARCO, not because of it's quality, but because it charges me 45 cents to use my debit card and that 45 cents pretty much makes the price different not a difference at all. The only places I fill up are 76 because it's the closest to my house and Chevron because it's the closest to my work.

Heres a true story:

I filled up with base gas in san diego and went to reese's to get a tune. My VIII was not making any power. Power stayed at around 330. After scratching our heads, I told james what fuel I was running. He said we needed 76 gas, so he drained out the tank and I went and got some 76. Sure enough we started making some power. Final #'s are in my sig. I was surprised that fuel made that much of a difference because I always knew or believed that all fuel came from the same refinery just the additives were different.. Take it for what it is.

Here's some additional information.Â* I worked for ConocoPhillips briefly.

Refiners can and do have MASSIVE stores of fuel in tanks on and off-site of their refineries.Â* This is how they balance immediate disruptions in their supply chain.Â* After that comes pipeline oil (which contains oil from multiple manufacturers).Â* After that there are salt cavern reserves but that would be like some serious Mad Max situation.

Also, "Turnarounds" on equipment do not shutdown the entire refinery... merely one process, for example a distillation tower for say, jet fuel.Â* They are ALWAYS producing some blend of different products 24 x 7 simultaneously.Â* Their processes (and end products) also vary depending on the quality of the crude they received in order to maximize yield.
