It looks like AMS is coming out with a tranny cooler for the EVO X MR.

From AMS's sales manager:

"We have been hard at work developing a very nice trans cooler for the EVO X MR and Ralliart. Using a very high quality Setrab cooler, High quality Fan and OEM like mounting brackets. We hope to retail this right around $500.00 and this should dramatically help out trans temps on the MR and Ralliart...hopefully making that "slow down" alarm go bye bye lol"

"Stay tuned! In about 4 weeks we should have all the mounting brackets in stock and be able to retail this guy to the public!!!!"

There are some pix in the evo m forum.

Hopefully they plan to add some directional ducting for this similar to what we have on the oil cooler side....

It'll look stock from the outside and you probably won't see it at all behind the fog lamps.

There's another write up below on the woes of the MR heat exchanger as well as a good write up on a fan solution.

Interesting quotes:

After the first "baseline stock" track outing (ECR, Oct 11, 2008) in a new 2008 EVO X "MR" we noted that after 2-3 hard laps the transmission would overheat during each 20 minute session. This was with a totally stock suspension and drivetrain - so why didn't any of the million magazine articles praising the EVO X's flappy paddle semi-automatic "DSG" style transmission mention this after their many on-track tests?

Well we found out from talking to a local Mitsubishi dealer that when the brake pedal is even lightly pressed ("covering the pedal", which is what you do when you are using a Left Foot Braking technique) the clutch is semi-disengaged... allowing for clutch slip and rapid transmission overheating.

What's the difference between the stock cooler and the AMS one besides AMS being a Setrab core?

??

what? there talking about adding a transmission cooler...the other one the car has is the oil cooler for the motor...

read a little more before you ask such simple questions....

also, Blaze...thanks for the interesting quotes and pics that are up there....nice to see people figuring out how to make the X a lot more versatile

o. well like stated...the evo has no trans cooler. it has been running hot and overheating during track sessions and AMS is currently finishing development on there version of it.

seems to have great potential when its all figured out and i would say a must have for all those with a X that decides to track there cars.

This cooler is specifically for the SST Transmission.
The SST current comes with a trans cooler, however there are several problems with it.
-Â* the core is not sufficient for the amount of heat the tranny generates during extended aggressive driving
-Â* the fog lamps block flow to the existing cooler
-Â* beyond the insufficient vent, there is not ducting to focus air over the cooler

The slow down alarm is a warning light that pops onto your dash at about the same time the ECU tosses the car into limp mode.

I will respectfully disagree with any neigh-sayers regarding the SST.Â* It is simply a marvel of technology that shifts faster and more accurately then any of us could hope to.Â* And it does it right every time.Â* Obviously, there are some "gotchas" right now.Â* It's the first year it's been out and MMC is retooling it as we speak for 2010.Â* The aftermarket is fast developing upgrades.Â* Clutch packs are pretty simple.Â* Audi has been making them for years.Â* The key has always been the transmission tune.Â* So once that is sorted, I honestly think nothing will touch an MR on the track.

That said, I will concur that it is ridiculous to have to pull the car off the track after 3 laps because the tranny over heats. However, if a $40 dollar spal fan and 10 bucks worth of sheet metal for ducting serves as the fix....I'll race anyone to home depot. You can beat me there, but I doubt if you'll keep up on the way home. ;)

honestly i love my mr.. i had the trans over heat at big willow a couple of time due to EXCESSIVE SHIFTING....thanks to john muller... change my shifting characteristics and removed my front fog lamps.. and light hasn't came on since.... last Sunday i was at Horst thief mile.. it was 105 degress with little wind.. and guess what.. not once did my car go into fail safe or even kick in check engine light... it seems people just like the shifting part.. but i love the technology and paddles..
just putting in my 2 sense guys... O0
i am going to streets of willow on august 16 again.. so ill let you know about the trans...

You should start planning install specials Sam.
This is something that needs to be done at a dealership anyway....

The factory SC-SST transmission temp sensor will send the car into limp mode around 240F-255F. It seems that there is no one constant temperature that sends it into fail safe mode. It all depends on where you place your factory temp sensor.
