In first gear, starting around 2k revs the car makes a high-pitch whining sound. It only does this in first the other gears sound great. I've heard it could be the transfer case. But wouldn't it make the sound in every gear? Someone else suggested it could be a problem with the clutch (i have an aftermarket clutch).
I'm just looking for some advice on how to diagnose the problem. Also if the t/c is going will my warranty cover it?

Its not the t-case....it would do it in EVERY gear. Not the clutch....it would do it in EVERY gear.

Have you launched the car? Experienced bad wheel hop while launching it? It is possible that you have hairline cracks in the gear (not chipped) causing it to whine. This is something that is not visible to the naked eye but revealed in a "wet magnafluxe" test.

I have the same thing with mine in first gear. I heard it was pretty normal and I have had it for a few years now, but have not experienced any other problems.

I agree with Alan. I would change the Fluid in your Tranny and your T/C just to be on the safe side. If your driving a 5spd, try using a different brand oil. Run Royal Purple or something. If you are using an aftermarket oil, then use the OEM fluids. Give that a shot and see what happends.

that happened in my last evo after it had an issue with popping outta first gear launching it at the drag strip. alan is probably right about it though..

+1

I launched my semi-new Shep stage 1 re-bulid a few times and got the same noise- especially when 1st gear RPMs were on the decline (6000 to 1000)- similar to a high speed reverse sound...

The gear would drive fine though, it's just the noise was not normal....

I had to send it back and get it fixed, all other gears, etc. were unremarkable...

Sounds like mechanical damage- the fluid swap solution seems like a bogus theory....

As much as I know 1st gear has straight cut and that’s what is making the noise and there is nothing to worry all of us have the same noise. I’m a new owner and I just bought the car month ago

how would someone go about fixing this whine? i have a similar sound in first only, and i'm planning on changing my clutch soon would they be able to fix this easily with transmission off the car and would it be costly?
