great post! This is a neccesary thing for all owners of stated car to be aware of. I have a little daughter and would be in some trouble if there were a fire while she was strapped into a car seat.

Mitsubishi Recalls 2008-'09 Lancer Evolution, Ralliart and Sportback Ralliart
Date posted: 09-15-2009

WASHINGTON — Mitsubishi is recalling 6,903 of its 2008-'09 Lancer Evolution, Ralliart and Sportback Ralliart vehicles with turbocharged engines because a stress crack in the fuel pipe could result in a fuel leakage and fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The manner in which the fuel return pipe is attached to the engine, in combination with frequent vehicle operation at certain engine revolutions, may result in a resonance that, if continued over time, may cause a stress crack to develop at the fixed portion of the fuel pipe," said NHTSA in its recall summary of the problem. "If this stress crack develops, fuel leakage may occur. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire."

In other documentation filed with the federal government, Mitsubishi noted that it became aware of this problem in September 2008. At that point it said it "received information from the field regarding a customer complaint of a gasoline smell while driving.

"Investigation of the returned part showed that the fuel return pipe attached to the engine had a small fatigue fracture. Mitsubishi conducted intensive tests but was unable to determine the cause of the failure at that time."

In April 2009, the automaker said it received a "similar complaint" and "found a similar issue." But it wasn't until the end of August that a decision was made to issue the recall notice.

Mitsubishi dealers will replace the fuel return pipe with a new part and two additional attachment brackets to better control fuel pipe vibration. The recall is expected to begin on September 29. Owners can contact Mitsubishi at (888) 648-7820.

Inside Line says: If you own one of the aforementioned vehicles, have it checked out ASAP with your dealer. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

Bump this up, everyone should read. BTW, the dealer is required to perform the recall work regardless of whether you have mods.
