so about a couple months ago my clutch will grind when i shift into 5th gear and only 5th gear. I don't have any problems with any of my other gears and it would only do it if I'm driving it hard and shifting it anywhere over 3000rpm. when i bought the car it felt like it already had an aftermarket clutch and the car only has 45k miles right now. Is this common for this to happen? Will this turn into a major problem? any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

I'm not transmission or clutch expert, but grinding gears cant be good._.

how many miles did you buy the car with? when was the last time you changed the drivetrain fluids?

I've got a 5th gear grind ONLY on high rpm shifts from 4th to 5th. When I just press in the clutch and let the rpms drop then engage 5th there is zero grind. For the life of my 5th gear I just take it easy when I shift into that gear...i'm on 20K with this issue.

Change out the fluids, although that's a band aid, and see what the results are. Maybe you could also adjust your clutch next...

As far as I know, IX GSR's are known to grind on 3rd and 5th gear. IX MR's are known to happen on I believe 2nd and 6th. Contact your local Mitsu dealer.

Usually the synchro's go bad.

Yea, My Evo Grinds 5th gear also, but only when im switching from 4th to 5th at high RPMS. other then that, I never grind. From what I hear, the 5th sucks balls on the 03 evo's...

Would having an aftermarket clutch void my drivetrain warranty? :(

i had a celicagts with a six speed and had a very similar problem where it would grind unless the rpms were low. turned out to be a synchro. thats what it sounds like to me

as long as you dont have a 6 puck clutch, you should be ok

I got mine replaced under warranty. Make sure you have all your maintenance records. I was told $1500 @ one dealership, went to another and was told it would be taken care of. Got a free clutch install while I was at it lol.

Yeah... 5th gear grinding is a common problem on the 5-speeds. The 6-speeds like to do a 6th gear lockout and the grinding in 4th...

Try to get it warrantied... If you can't ship the sucker off to shep, it'll be cheaper to have shep rebuild it then to have the dealership do it, and you end up with a much better tranny.

Yeah .. if your in warranty.. take it to the dealership. If your out of warranty... send it off to Shep.. (RRE/TuningTech) can do the breakdown and get it shipped out.
