That is not normal. Look for stuff that isnt hooked up. Go over your install or get it to someone that can.

According to a Tech who works for Mitsubishi they all do this.Â* I posted in another thread that I believe it to be air turbulence and I was able to get rid of the sound by buying the Air intake inserts that supposedly help save gas by spinning the air, they sell at these at PepBoys.Â* If you try this and have success as I did please let us all know.

Any reason you would say this?Â* It's not bad for anything on the car.Â* They supposedly help save gas but I have not seen this.Â* All I know is it got rid of my high pitch low volume whistle.

Well if it is a scam for it's intended use.Â* I could care less as it got rid of the whistle that comes from the intake.

After listening to the incoming air for a while I I narrowed it down to turbulant incoming air that is hitting the MAF. It's obvious to me that the sound is coming from that on my car and I am glad I was able to get rid of the sound.

LOL, NO.

Otherwise I would have said that.Â* A Stethoscope would be a good tool to find out where the sound is coming from you your ride.Â* On my ride, it was obviously air across the MAF was causing the whistle as it still did it to me at idle, but it was only noticeable with the stethoscope in my ears.

AGAIN, THIS WAS ON MY RIDE & YOUR SITUATION MIGHT BE THE SAME OR IT MIGHT BE DIFFERENT.

I say that because those little "tornado" things are horrible restrictions that do nothing what they claim to. Magic Beans. Putting one in your turbo inlet would negate any possible gain from the AEM intake. It is also somethign made in china out of cheap crap that can come apart and get sucked into the turbo wheel.

A little more turbo noise would be normal with a less restrictive intake tract. Anything that is less restrictive to the air flow into the motor will also be less restrictive to various noises eminating from the turbo and BOV. One step forward with the intake, one step back with the "vornado". Again to the original poster here... please dont try this.

I have installed, driven and tuned more AEM intakes on EVO Xs than I can count. I really dont hear anything that I would call a "high pitch whistling sound" as described by the OP. If your car actually makes a high pitched whistling sound _and_ you cant figger it out, please take your car to an EVO specialist and get it checked out. If you are in the deep 909, AEM Intakes is out there too. Get it looked at by them.

To the OP (who seems to have abandoned this thread months ago so in reality I am speaking to anyone who is considering necro-bumping it in the future :-P ) : There could be something horribly wrong with the part, something horribly wrong with the install, or it is just a normal noise from a less restricted turbo and you are super sensitive to it.

mike knows best i wouldnt take my car anywhere beside roadrace, i think that the line between the valve cover and intake was kinked due to being to short got new hose going to try that if still doing it i will be taking it to roadrace.

i have the AEM intake kit on mine, with the crappy stock clamp on the turbo inlet hose, it was running ok. but once i bought a stronger clamp it started making the same high pitch whistling winding noise, but its building up more boost now and actually runs better now. i think its normal

Interesting necro...

On a related note, many years ago I had a Tornado Air unit dyno tested. Performed baseline -> tornado installed -> tornado uninstalled dyno pulls on my 1995 Ford Probe GT back in the day. The results? Loss of torque and horsepower with the device installed. Both sets of pulls done before installation and after removal all clearly showed that the pulls with the device installed were weaker pulls. It wasn't a huge loss, but plainly obvious across the board loss of maybe 2-3 hp except at low rpms (below 3000) where it was about the same.

The stupid things I did with my money, both back then and today, just to prove a point...

Having said that, apparently it *might* be possible to see some gains with some older carburetor equipped vehicles.
