so u think its the clutch?

i didnt launch or anything, i was on a uphill slope so it revd up to 7000 before the car started moving..thats how the smell came about. i got the car at 35k miles and im sure the previous owner changed it out but i havent. im at 60k right now.

ok, simple test to test the clutch, come to a complete stop, put it in 5th gear and slowly let go of the clutch, if the clutch is good it should stall out, if its bad it will go lol. another test is get on the highway and cruise it and then put it in 5th gear at 3,000 rpms and floor it, if it slips and goes nowhere and the rpms just go up then your clutch is slipping, if it holds and the rpms move slowly up while the car accelerates than the clutch is good. worst case scenario its your clutch and tranny. i had a worst case scenario where i blew my axle, transfer case and tranny, 2 weeks after replacing my clutch lol. but good luck and keep us updated.

i think its slipping cuz thats what it does on the highway but ill for sure try the stalling test tomm. im hoping its just the clutch and nothing else..im not trying to drop a tuns load of money! lol but ill keep ya posted. thanks.

then yeah sounds like its just your clutch that can and will go out any second, so before you're stuck without a clutch, trying gathering the dough and take it to get it replace to save you the tow fees to a shop for a clutch job, unless you have AAA lol,

So its the clutch, next question, ain't trying to blow alot of money but what's a reasonable clutch for a evo that's pushing like 375?

RRE, Reese, and Massimo should be able to take care of you.

A ACT HDSS or XTSS/XTSD should do the job for that amount of power and then some :) If you want to test your clutch go on a fairly steep hill in 5th gear(2k rpms) and floor it, and if the rpm's shoot up then the clutch is on its way out.

Just go with the ACT HDSS. That will suit your needs and power. O0
PM Massimo Power for pricing on the clutch & labor. I think he has a special going on right now on the clutches, but i am not sure.
Just PM him and go from there.
Goodluck mang! :)

Agreed. I run an ACT full-face organic clutch on my Evo which dynos in the high 400s/low 500s with no issues (and it's been to the track too). Driveability will definitely suffer with a twin disc clutch or a pucked single.

RRE has changed more Evo clutches then the other places combined. They have a VERY affordable "no name" brand they use that will get the job done with the power you're making....and it will not kill your pocketbook.

Yep, I've tracked mine 4 times with no issues as well.

Uhmmm.......good luck it's probably gonna take a first timer 10+ hours to do the job because there are couple tricks to get through things a bit faster. Prepare for a lot or cussing and anger :2funny:

Ummmm yeah the Buddy System + beer and jackstands in the driveway I'm guessing? :buck2:Â* gl with that O0

Personally I would rather just save myself the time and headache and let RRE do it...they have the lifts, tools, know how to get it done in a few hours... as opposed to a whole weekend. BTW it's quite difficult to get the proper amount of fluid back in the tranny without a pump.... can ruin your whole tranny if it's low on fluid

he's probably broke from buying the clutch

If you have the tools and man power, it can take up to 16 hours. If you dont, expect days to weeks.

Manpower isn't an issue. And beer shouldn't be either. Lol drain the tranny might be an issue. How dies that go? Any links that have instructions for this project?

Thats actually the easiest, draining the transmission.

In a way, its his car, he can do what ever he wants to cut cost. But as we all know, a clutch job is no walk in the park.

My friendly advice, is to make sure your torque everything to factory spec or spec specified in the instructions.

I'm pretty decent when it comes to mechanical stuff w cars. Especially evos, just never done a clutch job or anything that has to do w a tranny. I'm sure I'll figure it out. I just spent like 750 for flywheel and clutch so I'm not in the mood to drop another 300 for install and stuff.

I've never done a clutch job either or anything to do with the tranny..... But my Dad and an ex RRE employee + one that still works there showed me enough to do some basic things to my VIII and then some..... But I would NEVER take on the task of changing a clutch on an Evo.... It's not a FWD car nor a RWD for that matter..... There's a lot of things that can go wrong.
And you don't know how to drain the fluids? *scratches eyes out*

750 for a clutch? You got some fancy pretty one with a pretty multi colored pressure plate didn't you? Yet you can't spring for the labor to have it installed? :buck2:

Did you buy all new fluids? For the tranny , diff and TC? You'll need some new fluids.
GL

*waits for I broke my Evo or car doesn't go into gear now that I changed my clutch post *

$300 more for labor and fluids is not a bad deal.

You only need to change out the clutch every 30k+ miles depending on how you drive. If you dont have the funds, wait it out a bit. Cause rushing and doing it yourself can cost you 4 times as much to repair what you can damage. (Another clutch/flywheel [$750], transmission [$3000+], labor [$???])

And a couple beer, I dont think it would help, just incase you forget to put something back.

Yes, I've done about 80% of a clutch job by myself and it took me 7hrs or so to complete it.
