Recently I noticed my Evo (IX) grinds out of first gear. It almost sounds like the brakes are grinding but it's not brakes. It only does it once in a while and the other gears are fine. Took it SCM who explained it won't covered under warranty so I'm SOL.

Any idea what it might be? Transfer Case or Transmission? Any suggestions on any vendors? Thanks for your help.

Yes I can hear the grinding while accelerationg (slightly) and clutch engaged. So far only out of first gear. Thank you for any feed back you can give me!

If this were me, I would just go to RRE immediately.
It seems that all the dealers will not even warranty a shift knob these days, so you might as well go to a shop with a 100 percent solid reputation as an honest shop with 100 percent customer satisfaction and 1000000 percent DSM/EVO skillz/knowledge.
I wouldn't drive except to go to RRE.

Don't risk making things worse by driving all around waiting for an answer from the interwebz.

Yeah I agree,it's driven sparingly. The guys at SCM think it's the transfer case. Gus @RRE also points to the tranny. I was hoping it wasn't. A new transfer case runs about $3K plus laborĀ* javascript:void(0);

could it just be the sound of the clutch disc rotating on the flywheel on first motion? sounds funny but ive heard some funny things

Bring it by and we can check it out. We have someone here that knows a thing or two about Evos/Dsms. I'm willing to bet its the clutch depending on the exact noise. O0
