My 5 speed trans has started to have problems... It grinds extremely bad going into 4th and 5th.... I also have trouble getting the car into 2nd gear under power.... so rather then fix the trans I want to see how much it would cost me to swap it out for a 6 speed?

Anywhere from $1200+. You are better off to rebuild though. :)

This! and I heard the 6 speed are picky on what fluids you use too.

You have shep racing, buschur racing, TRE, Jackstransmissions,
All do great builds for Evo trannys.

There is nothing wrong with the 6spd. Â*I still don't understand how people break their transmissions, I suck at driving and mine does fine. Â*Had mine for over 7 years, I've grinded all sorts of gears, down shifted too early, rev (mis)matched numerous times, ran hundreds of miles on the track, putting down 420+whp and torque and have over 50,000 miles. Â*I'm waiting for it to break so it can be rebuilt even stronger. :-P :mitsu:

People break them ( 5 and 6 speed) Mike because they can not drive...they slam it into gear...try and slip the clutch or "speed shift"... I was taught early on "clutch all the way to the floor ...place in gear ...release clutch "... it keeps the Evo tranny alive, working well and shifting smooth like butter for a long time.
Either gear box will work well and last for many miles if treated properly. Plain and simple. O0

I'm not saying the 6 speed is bad, its just a fact that it is weaker than the 5speed.
If i had a 6-speed i wouldn't go out of my way to change to a 5-speed just because.

In the OP case. I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to swap a 5speed for the 6speed. lol

maybe your clutch pedal needs to be adjusted or the line needs to be bled.

how does that fix his gear grinding?

its funny how some people wait for their transmission to break so they could rebuild it better, lol.

If you push the clutch pedal in and the clutch is not fully disengaged, that will cause the tranny to grind. A simple clutch pedal adjustment can fix that.

They are expensive, so I need a reason to spend that amount of money. Breaking gives me the excuse to rebuild ;) LOL

Yeah maybe.... But if that was the case shouldn't every gear grind not just 4th and 5th?

haha yeah only my 4th and 5th grind too (at high rpms- racing) :( but at the same time my clutches catching point is super short and finicky so if that (clutch adjustment) solves my problem ill be a happy camper :D

Same story for me, except I have 150,000 miles with no issues to date.
6-speed seems to be just fine....unless you are drag racing
