Hi,
I’m new to this form, and I just bought a 2005 evo 8 with 90K miles.Â* I drive the car as my daily driving car and drive it hard (( superrrrrrr hard)) . My 5th gear used to grind on high speed when I was shifting fast and now lately its grinding even more, even on slower speeds around 40. But (when I shift slow its fine). I used to have a GS300 with 2jz engine and w54 gear box. I had the car for 2 years and 40K miles 560 whp and no problem. I just wane know is this a common problem on evo?
:'(

Change your fluid, if that doesn't help u need new syncros

just wait for a used tranny to pop up for a good price.. im sure it would be cheaper then re building

thats a good option tho . tanks . but i was thinking what causes for fifth gear synchro to go out even if i put the used one idk whats going on inside and it may go out soon and i have to take it down again . if anyone knows where to get parts to reabuid i will do the rebuild by my self .so basicly if i can find parts and a better material syncros . i can make a bulet proog trany and also helping other who have thw same problem. i have found lots of topic that talks about 5th gear grinding .

Having someone rebuild a busted tranny is more expensive than having someone build a tranny with issues that are not broken yet...I am just saying.

My car is the same way...I dont drive the car hard normally but it does grind when I beat on it from 4th to 5th, not when I shift slowly. I did just have an exedy twin disc put in as well as new fluids so i may need the clutch fork adjusted. I would love to know if you solve your problem.

Jack's transmissions sells parts

if you have the knowledge and experience to do the job yourself and do it right that will be the cheapest option. I just got a rebuilt trans from TRE to solve this very problem. still breaking it in so can't comment to much except to confirm that this seams to be a fairly common problem with the evo 5th gear syncro.

Sounds like it's the synchros for sure...

I have the same problem. Well I think. 05 Evo with 37k. Has a very slight grind in 5th gear. If I push the clutch in and let the rpms drop and shift into 5th it doesn't grind at all. Its a very very slight grind. I'm wondering if fluid is the cause here...

If it was a synchro wouldn't it grind every time no matter what RPM?

I had similar problems i got mine rebuilt by R1 Motors in alhambra paid 200 parts cost i think 280 . Since i know the owner 600 out the door. Thats 2 yrs ago. Since.then no issues and transfer lsd upgraded at the same time very simple. My evo is 2003.

any idea what that job would retail for at R1? Hadn't come across any references to them when I was searching for trans shops. But now that I got a rebuilt trans from TRE it' s just a curiosity as I'm hoping to not have to deal with the trans or clutch again for at least another 70k miles.

my 5th grinds, had a complete tranny rebuild a few years ago. Was cruising on the freeway and accidently pulled it out of 5th without the clutch engaged. the good news though, it grinds going in but thats it. Normally what happens when a synchro grinds it will wear down and it will pop out. til this day my 5th is fine.

rebuild the tranny. if your gonna take it apart to replace one part, replace everything, that way you dont have to take apart the tranny 6 months down the road. dont buy a used tranny, you never know the condition. just do things right the first time so you dont have to go back and redo things. gl
