Can staggered wheels mess with your differential?

As long as the rolling circumference is the same you can fit whatever width tire+wheel combo you want. I believe I recall a tuner here mentioning "within 2%" difference as being safe to the differential.

For example, our stock size of 245/40R18 yields about 810 revolutions per mile. 275/35R18 gets about 815 per mile, or a difference of about .6%. 285/30R18 however would be 841 revs per mile, or about a 4% difference from stock and a good way to invest in a damaged differential. These little differences also vary from tire manufacturer to manufacturer and even between different brands from the same maker, so mind the tire specs closely.

The best answer is unless you have a very specific reason to do it, like it's a show car or 2WD conversion or something, just avoid it. If you do it you will probably become the butt of a lot of Evo owner jokes, and maybe even have rotten fruit and veggies thrown at you in the town square.
