So i recently bought an evo ix mr about 4 months ago. i noticed the tires were way off front were 225/60/17 and rear were 255/45/17. I changed all tires for new bfg 255/40/17 now when i am turning the steering left or right the car is stopping on its own like if i were to be applying the brakes. also when i start to slow down i hear a thump in the rear diff. Any ideas what it could be?

Only thing I can figure on the stopping problem is your brakes are dragging. There is no reason just switching tires would cause this other than your car being WAY out of alignment.

Unlikely you would hear a thump in the diff and if you did you would be going nowhere fast. Sounds like a suspension issue.

Welcome to the world of used cars. The previous owner got rid of it for a reason.

Yup well i took the car to alignment when i got my new tires everything is fine there. Its just when im turning left or right the car is stopping on its own some say it could be the center diff? I changed all fluids from front to back. it wasn't acting up for a day or so then it came back. :tickedoff: Yeah i never should of sold my evo ix se

The reason that you always need to run all four wheels and tires the exact same diameter is that if you dont, it jacks up the center differential. The center diff is designed to let there be some difference in the distance traveled between the front and rear wheels while turning. The front wheels make a larger arc than the rear wheels. The center differential also for that difference. But when you have different diameter wheels on the front and rear, the center diff is constantly spinning furiously while you are driving down the road. The spider gears and shafts inside the diff are designed to spin that fast and that long. Also your ACD clutch parts would be fairly well toasted. They also are not designed for that kind of prolonged slip. If your center diff is all locked up, everything binds as you turn.

At best you need a new ADC assy. At worst a new transfer case and open up the transmission and have a look at the diff. The cool kids have their potential used EVO purchases checked out by an EVO specialist or at least by a buddy that has been through it all. They would have caught the problem.

Same thing kills all that stuff when you tow an EVO with two wheels on the ground for any distance. Had a used car lot that dropped off an EVO X for the ABS light being on. Their tow truck dude shows up with that car all hooked up rolling like any POS FWD car.

Us: "Dude, you just killed the ACD and center diff towing it like that"

Black Knight Tow Truck Driver: "No I didnt"

Us: "Christ, that car stinks like burned oil from 20 feet away :-P This car is AWD, you are doing it wrong"

Black Knight Tow Truck Driver: "I do it like this all the time"

Us: The last EVO you brought here you used the dollys"

Black Knight Tow Truck Driver: "That one was AWD"

Us: "SO IS THIS ONE!"

Black Knight Tow Truck Driver: "No it isnt"

Us: "Did the car stink like this when you hooked it up?"

Black Knight Tow Truck Driver: "It's just a flesh wound"

OP: I had that fear when I was purchasing my Evo. Now you stuck fixing the issues, best advice at this point is to visit a legit shop and get it repaired. Hopefully u got some extra funds
