Today is the day!
Malibu canyon
Saturday September 4th, 10:00am
Meet at Neptune’s Net
42505 Pacific Coast Hwy
Malibu, CA 90265
—————————————-
Go drive a few fun roads for a couple hours. Go back to Neptune’s for lunch. Or head out and enjoy the Holiday weekend.
We have done this run a number of times and it’s pretty fun.
It was a fun day yesterday.
We had a small convoy: My RS, my nephew's MazdaSpeed6 and his childhood friend on a Civic Si.
Before we left San Diego, gave the boys a briefing, checked tire pressures, fluids, torqued lugnuts. Especially my nephew had a last minute front passenger axle replacement the night before as his car had started to have clicking noise (well we found that the CV boot was torn when we did his brake job the weekend before). Both my RS and his MS6 are equipped with radar detectors (I gave him my Gen1 V1), Labor day weekend and it came very handy.
Little foggy in San Diego when we left:
https://youtu.be/gTIDCV6-Etw
We were taking it easy to properly break in the MS6 front passenger axle:

One small pull with a rolling shot:
https://youtu.be/qS0qyYIYU7o
When we got to Santa Monica, traffic was already bad as a Ford pickup had flipped on its roof and the cops were just all over the place:
https://youtu.be/C15_-mBTlN0
I can't resist the entry tunnel to pop (and bang) a bit.
As its Labor Day weekend, there's lots of cars and motorcycles cruising. As well as cyclists and......... Police (CHP, PD and even copters).

A mile away from Neptune's Net, my radar detector was already picking up a Ka signal. Not too concern as we were not going to try to pull anything there (at least till we get to the mountain pass).
When we turned right we found someone hiding in front of Camp Hess Kramer:
He had his radar gun on. He looked at us and we looked at him, no harm no foul. We turned at Elice St. to meet up with the rest of the group.
We had a turn out of 11 cars:
- 1 Focus RS
- 1 Mustang GT350
- 1 MazdaSpeed 6
- 1 Honda Civic Si
- 1 Toyota 86
- 2 Mini JCW GP
- 1 Mini Cooper S
- 1 BMW M3
- 1 BMW M2
- 1 Subaru CROSSTREK (YOU READ THAT RIGHT!)
Not bad at all for a holiday weekend.
We went to Neptune's Net and noticed the CHP left his spot, I guess he thought his speed trap have been made" and left.
He actually went east bound on PCH and turned left at Tonga St. then at the other end of Elise St. he was watching us at the other end of the street.
We stayed there for a good 30 minutes, waiting to see if anyone else would show up. I guess the occifer got impatient to see if we will do something dumb:
On his PA system he said: “What, are you going to just keep standing in the road?”
We all replied, "No Sir, we're about to move aside. Our apologies....." . He was just looking for an excuse, and we did not not gave him any. He went back to his spot (waiting):

That's where we usually start our run. So we decided to take a different route. We'll go east bound, then north bound to the mountain passes. But rather than coming back down to Malibu, we'll come out of Thousand Oaks.
So we turned around:

I decided from the start that I will be at the back of the group to keep an eye on the boys just in case (the Toyota 86 is my nephew's classmate, new in the car scene). The CrossTrek was behind me and his brother-in-law (in one of the Mini JCW) to keep an eye on him.
This cruise was not as fast at the one last year, but its more technical. It has a lot of low speed, hairpin turns. Since the road re-work, not a lot of shoulders and a ton of cyclists on the mountain passes.
We stop on the top and took some photos:

Time to descend from the Touge:

Taking some of the same roads going down hill is quite different experience. definitely felt the rear of my car "power slide" once or twice. I was also told by the Mini JCW driver behind me that there were instances that one of my rear wheel would lift. There was only on time the road caught me off guard that I thought "oh crap".
We ate at Finney's Crafthouse at Westlake Village. Not as much hot fuzz there.
Bison burger there was good:
Not gamey at all. After we ate, we took some more photos:
Sorry for the bad panorama shot.
Heading back to San Diego, I saw a lot of cool cars on the road. One of them was a tasteful restoration of a classic:
I pulled all my windows down, smiled at the guy and his passenger and we all gave each other a thumbs up.
Oddly enough the guy is Asian.... looks Japanese and similar to:
Only with some grey hair.
I also saw saw some not too cool of cars. Like this one:
Even his license plate was cambered!
To each their own, but that ain't my thing.
