LED Tail Light Conversion?

I am considering the idea having a LED conversion for Evo tail lights made for us. This would be a printed circuit board that gets placed behind the red lens and it will require the tail lights to be seperated in order to install the kit. Below is a picture of a similar product made to replace motorcycle incandescent bulbs:



I am estimating a cost of $199 for a kit to replace all 4 bulbs with LED filled disks. This would work out great if you are planning on opening your housing to paint them. Who would be interested in something like this? If there is enough interest, I can persue having these made for us. If not, maybe I'll just have to make a one off for my car* O0

Here is a sample layout of the LED placement. These are 4 prong sqaure LEDs. The same as used in traffic control signals.

Yeah, I know. But the LEDs cost over $1 each and there would be 50 LEDs in each disc, with 4 discs to complete a set of tail lights.

Why would you need 50 LED's? Just one circle of LED's, which is what, 15 lights? 2 circles per side, thats only 60 LED's total. Piece o' cake.

ya 50 is alot and LEDs r bright as heck! we should get custom ones i want a happy face that i can turn on and off :)

I'm going to be picking up a tail light lens to use for some R&D tomorrow. Once we have the actual housing, we'll know just how many LEDs we'll need.

no

ive had them as brake light bulb upgrades with no problems. only drawback with LEDs (applies to all cars with them) is that they are directional. if you are directly behind the car in the aim of the LED they are bright.

however, move a fraction of the distance off the aiming point and they are almost useless.

This is true of the standard two prong round LEDs. however we have been using the square 4 prong LEDs with a 70 degree viewing angle. These are the same ones you see in LED powered traffic signals.
