Two exhaust cams found installed in my car

I just found out yesterday when installing the BC 272s into my car that I have two exhaust cams and been running like that for more than 3 years. They were installed by a vendor when I got the car back in 03.

When we open the cam gears cover, we found that it was unusual that the gears timing marks were not align but up side down. After scratching our heads for a while, we found that there were 2 exhaust cams installed. I can't believe a local vendor did this to me and I paid $600 for the cams back then.

There were some unusual issues when tuning the car back then like: it's a little laggy on stock turbo comparing to others, its torque and power curve sudden drop right around 5500-6000 rpms before picking up again, it was not making good power like others... I'm not sure if it has anything to do with this mismatch cams stuff but I'm very upset.

Can anyone tell me what happen, in theory or practical, if two exhaust cams installed in the car? I had 264 exhaust installed on the intake and the 272 exhaust. Thanks.

One with the exhaust cams with cut on head for the sensor (the intake cam didn't have the cut but I'm also seeing the actual intake cam before and know how it looks like).

Yes! This was done on my gt35r but long before it was upgraded the turbo. It was back then in summer 03. I think it's a very dishonest for a shop to do this. The whole story is that they f*cked up my car back then but then fixed it and told me everything is correct but I just found out yesterday.

I'm not sure to mention the name since they did some good things for the evo community so far but this is very shitty.

It's fit but I'm not sure about the perform. The cam gears timing mark have to be up-side-down so.

Dont you think it would be a good thing to say because some of us may have had cams installed by this vendor, or are waiting to get work done. Its a mistake but I am sure that the shop will also take the neccesary measures to correct the problem.

Where was the dowl pin located in reference to the timing mark on the valve cover? If you said the timing mark was 180 out of phase. I don't know how your car would even run with 16 bent valves. Something doesn't sound right.

Damn Tuan... 2 exhaust cams. That blows... But look on the positive side, you can now hit that 11 next time you go to Fontana.

I don't know if its possible to install two of the same cams in the Evo but you might want to keep something in mind Tuan. A friend of mine ordered some HKS cams for the Evo and when he was ready to have them installed, the installer noticed that there were two intake cams. It appeared that the vendor who sold the cams did not make a mistake, but HKS made a mistake in packaging. Fortunately this was caught before the cams were put in and the vendor got the correct cam from HKS and in the end, all was well.

You can install exhaust cam on the intake side but it's not possible to do the vice versa. The exhaust cam has the sensor cut for the cam sensor which the intake does not. To answer Stock Evo and Scott, the cam gears timing mark were completely opositive. When ever I rotated the timing mark of the intake to match the engine cover mark then the other gear mark is right at the bottom (180 degree from the mark). I'm pretty sure you know what I'm talking about.

Back then, when the vendor's mechanicÂ* installed them, they bent all my valves and have to fix the engine. They told me that HKS send them the wrong pairing set of cam and they since correct them. I trust them and did not check the engine until yesterday when I decided to put in a different set of cams. So basically, they were using the same "wrong" pair of cam to put in my car (for greedy purpose I guess) but work the magic on the timing to get it works then.

I wonder if there's a law suit should it be the vendor or HKS?

I don't think you can put two intake cams into the car. The exhaust side required a cut on edge of the cam for the sensor. The intake cam does not have that cut (at least for HKS and BC).

Hah, well you should be running 272s with your turbo setup anyway. Should be a nice upgrade no matter how the old cams were installed before.
