Muellerized... Fender Rolling/Clearancing for Big Wheel/Tire Packages

    Muellerized Fender Rolling Motto:
"We strive to ensure the quality of the paint finish will last the life of the car loan."

Ask yourself next time you want to get this job done elsewhere if they have the same motto or if they even care about your car a year down the road.

We don't have a set price for fender measurement/clearancing as it is not a one-size-fits-all job when done correctly and safely (clearance confirmed via actual measurement of the actual full suspension travel).Â* This means that each and every job is quoted based on the factors involved.Â* A partial list of these factors is:

    * Wheel Diameter, Width, and Offset (this measurement especially can be crucial)
    * Tire Diameter and Width - Note that tire sizes are like shoe sizes, they vary by brand/model.
    * Type of Suspension - In general, stock suspension uses less stroke (less fender rolling) than a properly setup aftermarket coilover suspension.
    * Condition of Fender - This is a biggie.Â* Some cars come to us with pristine fenders, some owners have been the unfortunate, unwitting victims of everything from a baseball-bat rolling job to "shaved" (aka cut, aka mangled, aka the paint is going to shed it's clear coat like a snake's skin) fenders.Â* In addition, they often have purchased the wheel/tire from someone who told them it would fit (usually a sales person who knows little to nothing about these cars) and now they've driven around with the fender not only cutting their tires, but the tires moving the fender without any regard to heating it up or doing it slowly and carefully like we do.
    * Clearance to inner suspension arms, inner wheel well, bumper mounting flanges/hardware, etc...
    * Intended alignment for customer - The alignment will affect clearance, but having an aggressive alignment is rarely a complete solution to fender clearance.

Please e-mail [email protected] so that we can get all the information necessary to give an accurate estimate and answer any of your related questions.Â* We ALWAYS recommend that you contact us to discuss appropriate wheel/tire choices because even if you don't buy them from us, we prefer appropriately sized wheel/tire packages because it saves you money and us headache.Â* Â*

Below are some sample images of various customer wheel/tire packages after Muellerized has measured and created clearance appropriately:

    Volk RE30 18 x 9.5 +35mm offset Wheels and 275/35/18 Nitto NT-01 Tires (Evo 8/9):

To make this fit, the fender lip was not "cut" at all.

We have been totally appalled by some local shops butchering evos by cutting the quarterpanels to pieces and charging money for it, then representing their low quality work as "fender rolling"

Some other examples of our fender rolling are listed below.

    Volk CE28 18 x 9.5 +28 Wheels and 265/35/18 Falken RT615 Tires (Evo 8/9):

    Enkei NT03+m 17 x 9.5 +38mm offset and 255/40/17 Toyo RA-1 Tires (Evo 8/9):

AME 19 x 10.5 +22mm offset Wheels and 275/30/19 Toyo Proxes T1R Tires (NOTE: This is on an Evo X):

Evo IX on Muellerized Skunk 2 Pro C Coilovers with Gram Lights 57s 17x8.5 +22 Wheels with Falken RT 615 255/40R17 Tires (Evo 8/9):

Volk Rays TE37 18x9.5 +22 Wheels with Hankook RS2 265/35/18 (Evo 8/9).Â* Original fender "clearancing" done by "another shop" which was then brought to us for proper fender rolling/clearancing.Â* As you can see in the pictures below the tires have already been scratched plenty by the fenders being cut by the previous shop.Â* Poor tiresÂ* :'(Â* They only have 1,000 miles on them!Â*

    Enkei RPF01 18x10.5 +15 Hankook 285/35/18 - Fender Rolling w/ stock struts - BEFORE CLEARANCING
(Tire had already contacted the chassis prior to customer bringing us the car. This had rubbed off a bunch of paint onto the tires. See how inboard on the tires the paint marks are.)

    AFTER CLEARANCING:

We of course try to always recommend the correct size and offset wheels beforehand so that minimal clearancing is required if at all, but we understand it is not always possible.Â* If you have a question as to whether the wheels/tires you're interested will fit on your car (this means clearing the fenders at FULL suspension compression as well as clearing all the inner suspension components), shoot us an e-mail or give us a call.Â* We are happy to help and can often get you a price on the wheel/tire as well.

I had Muellerized do my fender rolling earlier this week and am VERY happy with it. They brough me in on both sides to show me what it looked like fully compressed, discussed options for bigger tires in the future, etc. Great work and highly recommended

Thanks 1WkdEvo! Â*We strive to do the best job possible, keeping safety in mind as our paramount concern with larger wheels/tires. Â*The wheels or tires contacting the chassis or suspension components in any manner is absolutely unacceptable in the Muellerized part of town.

Here's a before/after picture for you guys. Â*I added it to the original post as well.Â* 1WkdEvo wanted to create clearance not just for his current wheel/tire package but also for running big boy 275 width tires in the future.Â* Luckily Muellerized has in it's inventory wheels/tires that we can measure with to make your wildest Evo dreams come true.Â* So we did!

That is not an evo wheel/tire set-up.

It is much easier and less expensive to purchase wheels/tires that fit the car, try a 18 x 9.5 35 offset then tires as large as 285s fit after the fenders are rolled, 265s fit really well for a street car, +12 is wide body territory and then some.

    Thanks, and good luck.

How much do you charge to roll the front/rear fenders?

Hourly at our shop rate, many factors come into play to quote the task accurately.

I want to thank John and his staff for an awesome job! I went to go see John last Thursday to get my rear fenders rolled, super clean job worth the wait time. He walks you through all the steps to show his customers exactly what him and his staff are doing. They make sure that your wheels are getting the proper clearance. Couldn't be happier!! Thanks again!!

I want to know what sizes I can fit properly on a X? with tires...and will I require fender rolling? The wheel in question is a CE28 18 x 9.5 .... is +35 offset ok? can I fit a 275 or 285 tire on there no problem with no rubbing issues? or ghetto wheel spacers? because I will never use those things.

The wheel offset you are looking for is +22 for that wheel width and diameter on an Evo X.

As for tire size, this will all depend on the suspension in use as well as the model of tire, but typically a 265 tire may require a small amount of fender rolling (1 - 1.5 hour), while a 275 or 285 tire will require a more significant amount of fender rolling (2+ hours).

Anyone else looking for wheel/tire sizing/specification information as well as fender rolling estimates, please feel free to send us an e-mail to [email protected] so that we can send you one of our info forms (short questionnaire) so that we can get all your questions answered with everyone on the same page in terms of your car and your goals.

    Thanks!

Re: Muellerized... Fender Rolling/Clearancing for Big Wheel/Tire Packages

In another thread a member asked about fender rolling versus fender cutting (AKA Fender Shaving).Â* Here is our response:

Cutting the fenders destroys the paint finish on the car.Â* TheÂ* heat involved in cutting the exterior of the car causes the clear coat to start peeling and shedding it's skin, like a snake.Â* The cutting process burns right through the paint and overheats the surrounding paint.Â* On many levels cutting the exterior of the car with an abrasive disk (or equivalent) is a bad plan.Â* Cutting the fender disconnects the outer quarter panel from the inner fender well, which gives the quarter panel less strength and the flexing between the panels increases the likelihood of the paint peeling off over time.Â* The quarter panels from the factory are spot welded to the inner fender well in multiple places for rigidity.Â* By rolling the fenders we maintain the OE rigidity of the assembly and end up with every possible means of preserving the paint finish on the car.

NOTE: The only time we even really consider cutting the fenders would be for a complete wide body car which is a whole different ballgame and EVEN THEN we re-locate the quarter panel and the inner fender well to each other with tack welds similar to the factory once the cutting is complete and then the area is re-painted to protect the material from the elements.
