Thread: Battery thoughts...

    Battery thoughts...

After having my car for 6 years, I have tried a few batterys.* I went to the mini 680 battery from Oddysey:

    http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc680series.htm

I soon found that it was a bit touchy if you downloaded logs too much or listened to the radio at all with the motor off, it would run low and it lacked reasonable reserve capacity.* I upgraded to the 925 Oddsey which has 925 cranking amps and a lot more capacity:

    http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc925series.htm

Here is the custom bracket I made:

    Here are the specs:
    PC 925MJT Specs:

925 cranking amps for 5 seconds
870 cranking amps for 10 seconds
765 cranking amps for 20 seconds
    Short circuit current over 2400A
    28 amp hours
50 minute reserve capacity with 25amp load
With metal jacket and SAE automotive terminals
    Length 6.64"
    Width 7"
    Height 5 7/8"
    Weighs 26 lbs

This one has worked well and the car always starts and adequate reserves.* There has however been one issue.* My car has seen a lot of work and been sidelined from time to time.* If the battery isn't on a trickle charger or driven constantly, it gets wounded.* After my recent body work, I found that I lost significant reserve capacity and have had to jump the car after it sat for the weekend.* I did a quick check of alternator current with the ems and it is strong so it looks like I am having yet another 925 Oddessey die.* This will be my 3rd one.* Each time my car was not driven for some time, it has died.

I was going to order another one because it seemed to be the strongest "mini" I have found but then I came across the Braille B121C carbon battery.*

    Here are the specs:

    B3121C
    21lbs/9.5kg
    1380 Pulse Cranking Amps
    31 Amp/Hr Reserve
    6.6” x 5.2” x 6.8"
    Right Side Positive

It has a lot more capacity than the Oddessy and is lighter too.* I had heard about the super small Braille's but stayed away because of capacity concerns.* This one is the largest of their Carbon Racing series and relatively new.

Anyone else tried this particular battery?

FYI, I found it on amazon for $170.00 on sale.* It normally goes for 230-250 dollars.* Bottomline, I want the most durable and powerful "mini battery" I can find.

Any first hand experiences with this battery would be appreciated.

Having a lot of friends with Lotus's and their tiny batteries. Those guys have tried just about every option for mini batteries and none of them seem up to to task. So, most of them basically use a trickle charger of some sort...

    Re: Battery thoughts...

I've used brailed before on other cars and for the most part there's hardly any issues. The challenge here isn't soo much the brand and cranking power these batteries poses; but how limited in keeping a charge presents in these *mini size batteries we love and need in order to make more room. Since its kinda silly that some evos never see any issues with ur average mini battery (ex: what buschur used to offer with their uip combo)while other evos have consitent issues no matter the brand.
One of my evos saw more than 5 batteries. Craxy and madness I tell u. *

i dont know about everyone's setup... but not too long ago i was helping jap_whip out and he killed his optimia redtop because somehow his inovate was still drawing power even when the car was off. i know not all batteries are created equal... even if they are from the same maker. right now i plan on sticking with a normal size batter because i like my audio setup.

I use an OEM Miata battery. Its a Gel Cell just like Optima, yet its the size of a mini battery.
The last one lasted me over 3 years, and they cost around $100 and have 1 year replacement warranty. Can't beat OEM quality.
And I can listen to my stereo while my car is off, and I can do it for longer periods of time. (2 subs, 2 amps, 4 components)

    Re: Battery thoughts...

Any mini-battery is going to have issues with holding a charge if it is not used on a daily basis. That is why a trickle charger is absolutely necessary with any mini-battery setup...regardless of how good it is.

Love my PC680........My car sits for 5 days at a time w/out turning over..........The little battery has STONES ......Now I must admit, I dont stress it too much w/ my 2 speaker sound system LOL.......Will never convert back to the big battery unless it was trunk mounted.......Peace

    Re: Battery thoughts...

I remember reading a thread on EvoM I believe where they discussed a no name brand mini battery that cost way less and had reported good results. I believe the manufacturer was Dekka and the website is Tristate battery or something like that. On a side note I suppose you could try a quick disconnect .* I have used a little plug in trickle charger that monitors the battery and adds charge as necessary to keep battery topped off with great success http://www.batterystuff.com/battery-...attery-tender/

If you place and amp meter in line most of time you will find things like car radio clocks and station memory continually draw a small amount of current and drain your battery.* Car alarms especially aftermarket do number as well.* I have resolved to deep cycle batteries on one car and charging or jump starting the other when they sit like they frequently do.*

Do you have any pics of that setup? I also love my audio setup, and I don't plan on getting rid of it. I was considering trunk re-location to avoid any issues. (2 amps, 4 components, 1 sub, 1 screen)

    Re: Battery thoughts...

what are the cons of having the battery relocated to the trunk? I am assuming that the main reason for the mini battery is to have a short rout UICP so why not relocate the OEM one to the trunk and you're set! no?

GT40, didn't you relocate your battery to the trunk many years ago? Or did i just confuse a battery with your funky custom fuel pump setup?

Yeah here is the previous layout with the yellow cable being the battery line:

I changed it because Having a hot wire running the the full length of the car could pose safety issue in the event of a track condition roll/crash and pose a fire hazard.* It also is surprisingly heavy.

FYI, the braille 3121c is sold out everywhere

update: I got the braille 3121. It is definitely what I hoped for as the strongest min battery out there. It really is 21 lbs when I weighed it and specs are stronger than stock. it is basically a 6.5 x 6.5 x 7 cube with 1300 amps!

    Re: Battery thoughts...

Isn't the 14115 the one that most companies make mounts for? I was thinking of getting the 14115 and one of the billet mounts from neisi, but def put pics of your install up, and maybe pics of your brackets. I'd much rather use that battery with my setup, and it's actually CHEAPER by like $75 than the 14115. (according to the website anyway)
