    Overheating at Idle

    Hey guys..Got this little problem..

I can smash on my car..drive it form here to mars..or just cruise and my temp needle stays perfectly normal..However when I let the car idle for more then 5 minutes it starts to rise..the sec I start to drive the needle comes back to normal..

    What I did..

    -Changed the thermostat
-Saw the fan kicks on..while the car is idling & while the needle starts to rise.
-My overflow tank isnt overflowing or sucking coolant..
    -Car isnt smoking
-There is no coolant in the oil & no coolant anywhere around the block
-Doubt my head gasket is bad because car pulls awesome..

    What could it be..

    -Air bubble in system
    -bad ground wire
    -radiator
    -radiator cap..

Lemme know if you have any idea..thanks

    -Mike

Air flow is key.... So without your car being in motion your only getting what ever cfm your fan is rated at a standstill...

Try burping the radiator... Probably just some air in it

    Re: Overheating at Idle

Fans turn on but it dont cool... You drive the car and it cools....

Very contradictory. You sure the fans are blowing in the right direction?

Saw the fan kicks on..while the car is idling & while the needle starts to rise
Which fan? Driver side back of the radiator? PAssenger side in front of the radiator? Both?

    Factory stock fans?

Any better or worse with the A/C on?

Any better or worse with the heater on?

For you... what is "normal" on the gauge? What is "high"?

Last mod/work done just before this started happening?

How many miles on the car?

I've seen dieing waterpumps do this before; and dieing fans, and dieing relays...

    More info please.

Srry guys havent have access to my computer for couple days..

last mod done to the car was A.c Removal..there is no a/c fan

-I drive and the car does not overheat..

-I let it idle..watch the fan come on..and about a min after the fan (DRIVER side slim fan) comes on..the temp gauge starts to rise..

-Ground wire on manifold is there..added that a while back..

-37k miles on the car..was also wondering if it was water pump related..

-Normal on the gauge is the needle at the first wave (closest to the bottom)

    Re: Overheating at Idle

^ I never let it get that high..I would shut the car off when it was about 3/4 up..

Well.. I think I may have found my problem..NOT 100% sure so dont hold me too it..

There are 3 major grounding points on the car that I know off..Yes, there my be more but this is all I know off..

    1. Intake mani to firewall (Underneath your swap bar)
    2. Right behind the battery
    3. Exhaust cam sensor..(Super thin if 20 gauge)

Well..When I installed the Magnus V5 I removed the one underneath the sway bar..Also, I flipped my mini battery around..so I had disconnect that ground..and I was left with the SUPER THIN ground by the cam sensor..

Couple weeks ago..I went ahead and re attached my ground from the intake mani to the firewall..so I thought it was no issue..Now, I just went outside..and saw the it was disconnected...I re connected it..let the car Idle for about 5 min..(while the driver side slim fan was kicking on) and the needle just stayed there..is it fixed??? Not sure but ill keep you updated..

    Re: Overheating at Idle

I agree with the possible water pump issue. Personally, I would check that first only because on 2 different cars, when I had this exact problem, it was the water pump both times. Both cars were Civics though (an 85 and a 98) but both cars ran perfectly UNTIL I was stuck in a traffic situation or if the car was idling. Right when the car was sitting at idle, the temp would start to rise until I would pull over and cut the engine. If I drove off after the temp went down, it was all good until the car was at idle again. It might be something else but from your description, it sounds like what I have experienced with bad water pumps and I agree with the people who said it might be the water pump above as a result.
