Anything to do after tracking? I think i read somewhere to change your transmission/driveline fluid after a track day because of the heat.

Yeah after 2-3 track events you should do that :)

Re: EVO Specific Track Day Check List [for obsessive peoples].

Mike W sent me this cool thread that isn't as much about what to bring as to dispelling misconceptions on the track.Â* Check it:

    http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/road...nceptions.html

    pasted for your convenience.

    BY LUDACHRIS on DSM Tuners

It seems that everyone I talk to about road racing/open track days is almost always hesitant to try it out for one reason or another. Many people get caught up in the straight line speed and think that drag racing is cheaper and easier on your car. That's not always true. I wanted to start a thread that will help take away the road blocks preventing some people from participating in open track days and answer a few basic questions. Hopefully this info will get a few more people out of their shell and out on the road courses. Also be sure to read:
    Towing your race car...

    1. "My car isn't ready for road racing..."
    - All cars are ready for road racing. If your car is well maintained and in good running condition (which is should be) it is ready for the road course. Don't think you need a full racing suspension to have fun at the road course. All you need is some newer brake pads, good brake fluid (bleed on the system), tires that are not on their way out in the tread department, and working seatbelts - all things that your car should have anyway. You don't need a full-on race car to do an open track day. In fact, most cars that participate at track events are driven to and from the event. Rarely do you see cars trailered in.

    2. "It's too expensive to go road racing..."
    - Real road racing competition is not cheap, certainly. But doing open track days is not all that expensive. If you really want to get on the track there are ways to minimize the cost. NASA Pro Racing has a program that allows you to get free track time. Simply volunteer to work 2 events (number of events varies by region) and you'll receive a free track day in return. And even if you don't volunteer, for $100-150 for a day you usually receive instruction and over an hour of track time at a NASA event. Do the math - look at how much time on track for the dollar you get compared to drag racing and autoX. It's actually a better value even without the instruction.

    3. "I don't want to wreck my car..."
    - Road course events are almost always held in controlled environments and have rules in place to enforce safety. You're more likely to wreck your car on the street doing something stupid than you are at the track. It's funny to me how many people are fine with racing their car on the street but are worried about crashing at the trackÂ*

    4. "Too much wear and tear on my car..."
    - Yes, you will go through brake pads faster. You will have to change your oil and brake fluid more often. Your tires will wear out faster than usual. But that's what it's all about! Modifying your car to perform at its best and testing those modifications. The car will hold up to the challenge - especially if you keep up with the maintenance. You just have to know your car. Things might break. The might not. Chances are, if something goes wrong, it probably was going to happen eventually anyway. Why put so much time and effort into modifying their car and are then afraid to drive it like it's supposed to be driven?

    5. "What do I need for an open track day?"
    - A helmet. If your car is well maintained, which it should be, the only additional things you'll need is a helmet and a tech sheet. A tech sheet is a quick safety inspection to make sure your car is safe for the track. You can usually get this done at the track day or at a local shop specified by the organizing body for the event. It's done to make sure you have good tires, brakes, seat belts, wheel bearings, battery tie-down, no leaks, etc. Everyone who drives their car hard on the street and at the drag strip should be able to pass a tech inspection. It's just basic safety stuff.

    6. "What should I bring to a track event? How should I prepare?"
    - HPDE: Personal Experience [http://www.nasaproracing.com/hpde/firstday.html]
    - HPDE: Driving Tips [http://www.nasaproracing.com/hpde/preparing.html]

Road course events are the most fun I've ever had in my car. You get all the fun of an autocross event at higher speeds and it's not so one-dimensional like drag racing. Many tracks have long straights that give you the feeling of drag racing anyway. If you want to drive fast in a safe and controlled environment, and you want to truly improve your driving skills, you need to get out to the road course. It's the ultimate rush. It's all about being a fast driver, not having a fast car. Anyone can do it. Now get out there and learn how to drive, the right way! Once you do it you'll be hooked.

    THANKS for the link MIKE!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: EVO Specific Track Day Check List [for obsessive peoples].

    I respectfully disagree with #1,2,3 and 4.

#1 - I would say safety equipment is necessary even for first time tracking.Â* All it takes is one mistake, even going slow at the wrong turn/spot and you can roll the car.Â* For beginners first timers, every possible safety equipment might be overkill.Â* Rollover or crash once, and its not overkill.Â* But once you do 5, 10, 20, 50.Â* Its a must.Â* HANS + 5-6pt harness + roll bar (minimum) cage even better + fire extinguisher + batt kill switch + 2 layer driving suit...etc...

#2 - The track fee is cheap.Â* Its the maintenance that gets you.Â* Tires + pads + rotors + oil + brake fluid + gas (major)...assuming nothing on the car breaks/blows/snaps.Â* First 3 track days you can get away with low cost, but then it will eventually cost you $500-600 easy a track day.Â* If you are talking about fun factor/seat time to $ ratio in terms of track fee.Â* Hell yea super cheap. 2hrs of track time for $100-150.Â* Can't beat that.

#3 - Basically what I said in #1.Â* You can still spin into a wall or flip over.Â* Pretty easy to do as a beginner.Â* Just takes 2 wheels off, with little to no experience, noobies would try to correct it and it shoots you across the track and into a wall or into the open dirt field and flip over.Â* Just saying its still easily possible to crash.

#4 - Same as #2.Â* Cheap in the beginning, gets expensive after you do 5, 10, 20, 50.Â* The more power you make, the more wear on tires/brakes/etc...The more experience you have, the more money you spend on gas cuz more wot.

But in the grand scheme of things for your very 1st time, just go have fun and take things slow.Â* You won't have any major problems.Â* Instructor will be with you anyway to help with lines and stuff.Â* So relatively safe.Â* Its when you are on your 3rd or 4th track day and no instructor, and you think you know how to drive solo with no instruction and you start pushing and going faster and chase those lap times some people do is when things can go bad.Â* Just saying.

See you all out at the track and be safe.Â* Invest in SAFETY!! Just got myself a HANS and some other safety goodies.Â* I learned my lesson from the last track day.Â* Luckily it was a fairly cheap lesson and not an expensive one...if you know what i mean. or

I have been thinking about it and also because of your #3, I am going to do at least 2 days minimum of HPDE1, even if it is boring.

next weekend I will be there from the 8th at night when I get there to the 10th on the track.
I got a room at the the Super 8 today.
There are no fancy hotels but I was just wondering which one was better/more track day friendly...
I am just doing HPDE1 this time. I will probably do Willow Springs in May with NASA as well.
It seems like a smart way to get your feet wet.

On the no e-brake thing coming off the track. That is not for EVOs. Your e-brake is a separate little tiny drum brake.

The whole counterpoint #1, #2, #3, #4 thing. That is for stock cars, right? Because all these 400 whp cars we tune dont drive slow on the street with cages an on the track, HANS devices and ambulances following them 24/7 I am thinking. I tend to suspect they build big HP cars go WOT. If not on the track then where is this WOT happening? I am thinking I see more good wing/bad evo pics posted with the cars all splattered over the street than at the track.

So you dont think people should invest in safety gear for track noobies? People dont drive 80mph on city streets driving the racing line. I guess some idiots do. On the track, people are driving the racing line and most try to use the whole track. People on the street don't use the full street while on cornering limit do they? even if they have 400whp or w/e. My point is, driving the racing line at the track, you MAY put 2 wheels off or 4 wheels off and noobs would try to correct it and it will shoot them across the track instead of driving straight off like they should.

Points 1-4 is for all types of cars (stock and modified). Doesnt matter stock or modified, evos are inherently more expensive to track and you can still crash and roll at the track if you are inexperienced. Yes people who build big hp cars usually dont drive like grandma, but at same time dont drive like idiots WOT every chance they see open road or race every single brother and their mother on the street. Yes crashes are usually worse on the street and occur more often because #1 There are 50x the evos on the street versus the people who track. So that skews the perspective that street is more dangerous for crashing imo. #2 There are more things to hit on the street versus the track. At the track, you can either hit another car, wall, tirewall, or corner station, or just roll the car going off sideways. Its less common than crashing on street, but danger is still there. Why not just protect yourself if it does happen. You do sign a waiver to release the track and club of liability if you crash or injure yourself anyways. Not sure if insurance covers track accidents or bodily injury. They probably cover bodily injury...lol.

Point is, invest in safety gear no matter how fast your car may be. Safety gear is to protect both inexperience and experience track drivers. Like i said its cheap for the first ~3 events, then it gets real expensive. So i guess i agree that your first event can be "cheap".

Re: EVO Specific Track Day Check List [for obsessive peoples].

People build their EVOs to go fast, not to drive in the slow lane with Camrys and Explorers. Even a guy that does a track day a month still does 80 all the way to the track and back. It is all hapy and ploitically furry and fuzzy to pretend that everyone drives the speed limit on the street. At least on the track everyone is going the same direction, access is controlled and there is little to hit.

Going to the track does not have to be any harder on the car or driver than going through Ortega Hwy, Stunt Rd or Angeles Crest. And actually it should be a lot safer for everyone since there are no animals or bikes or police to deal with. It is up to you to kill your brakes and tires on the track or the street. Same goes for your butt.

Everyone's frst track day should be at Streets of Willow. It is pretty hard to hurt your car there. Anyone that can somehow roll their car off turn 1 @ Streets or somehow hit the pit will there would be the same guy with a pic of his car rolled and all looted and abandoned up on GMR. They should be checking more for HANS devices and cages on GMR than anywhere else

Re: EVO Specific Track Day Check List [for obsessive peoples].

Yes, i agree people build their evos to go fast.Â* I don't doubt that.Â* Just because people drive crazy on the street and crash, doesn't directly mean tracking is not dangerous.Â* To say that people who track don't need safety stuff because people drive fast on street and wreck is ignorant and wrong.Â* I agree that people don't follow speed limits.Â* Yes, the track is a controlled and safer environment than the streets.Â* I agree.Â* What I don't agree is that you don't advocate safety for people who track their cars.Â* Hence my counterpoint to #1 - My car isnt ready for road racing.Â* I agree that SOW should be a track people should learn on as their first track day.Â* Notice how I agree with you on some points and disagree with you on others.Â* Im not ranting. This is just an informed discussion to benefit anyone who cares about their life.

I have a few questions.Â* Please fill out this survey, so I can better understand your perspective.

    1) Do you care about safety for people who track their street cars on the track? Yes or No.
    2) Should cars have safety gear for the track? Yes or No.
    3) Is it possible to roll/crash a 250whp car at the track? Yes or No.
    4) Is it possible to roll/crash a 400whp car at the track? Yes or No.
    5) If you had a choice to give someone more power at the track versus getting them to install safety gear in their car for the track.Â* Which would you pick and why?
    6) Do you think HANS, Rollbar (rollcage), bucket seat, harness is necessary at the track? Yes or No.
    7) Do you recommend against having a HANS, Rollbar, bucket seat, harness for people who track their cars? Yes or no.
8 ) Is it possible to spill coolant/oil/fluid at the track? Yes or No.
    9) Have you driven at Streets of Willow?Â* Yes or No.
    10) Have you seen the skidmarks at the various turns (T2, Chicane, last turn, etc)?Â* Yes or No.

Im guessing those skid marks indicate people sliding off sideways and/or going straight off.Â* Either way, they are still going off the track.

Have you ever thought that people can still spin/crash/roll even if you are a good driver with 1000 track day experience with a well setup car.Â* All it takes is one guy to dump coolant, oil, fluid at the wrong place and you can have people spinning left and right doesn't matter how experienced you are.Â* It doesn't matter if a track is a safe track, shit can still happen to the best of us.Â* So now, do you still not recommend people getting HANS, Rollbar, etc.Â* If no, why not?Â* Can you die at a track day? Possibly. Very likely? Probably not.Â* Can you get injured at a track day? Yes.Â* Can injury be minimized with safety equipment? Most likely.Â* Is it possible to not spin/crash/roll on your first track day? Very likely.Â* Is there still a remote chance you could.Â* Probably.

I rest my case.Â* You can still roll/crash a stock car or low hp car.Â* Â*People can still wreck a miata, s2k, porsche, evo, ferrari at any track.Â*

So because its harder to crash at SOW means you shouldnt invest in safety gear?Â* Just because people drive GMR and some/alot crash doesnt mean that people who track their car, people at the track shouldn't be concerned of safety and potential of crashing.Â* Not exactly sure what you are trying to say really. Like you said, people speed in their 300-600whp cars on the street all the time. Most likely these same people will push their car and speed on the track too. Safety first.

This thread is about Evo Specific Track Day Check list.Â* Not a GMR, what safety stuff should be checked thread.Â* I talk about people needing safety equipment to track their car.Â* People do stupid shit all the time on the street, I don't doubt that.Â* People who track their cars need to be responsible to other drivers, to their own car, and ultimately to their self.

Yes I repeat myself a few times.Â* Just in case anyones misses what im saying.

    Example to answer questions...

    My Answers
    1 - yes
    2 - yes
    3 - yes
    4 - yes
5 - Install safety gear because I value my life.Â*
    6 - yes
    7 - yes
    8 - yes
    9 - yes
    10 - yes

I am staying at the Super 8.Â* I am sure it is shitty but it is close and I don't want to be super tired from the road.Â* I think the place is like $50...

Also, if anyone is there this weekend, Mike W from RRE was kind enough to hook me up with some extra brake fluid, oil, front and rear pads + EVO IX spark plugs.Â* I also have some other odds (hoses/clamps...) and ends (zip ties...) from RRE that I can sell at a discounted price on the track, so hit me up if you need anything.Â* I will be in a garage with Ed Nazarian and his EVO as well, so feel free to drop in and say hi.

Last, this is not the buyer's corner but I took my EVO to RRE today for a tech inspection to avoid the 7am line.Â* I recommend getting your EVO checked out prior to track days at RRE.Â* It might cost you a few bucks but you will know what is wrong and what is right with your EVO + you won't have to deal with long tech lines in the early morning.Â* I cannot imagine what a huge bummer it would be to get out to the track only to have your car break within a few runs or to have you brake pedal hit the floor... I am just saying...

I want to give a big shout out to Mike and the crew at RRE for helping me get ready for the track.Â* I also want to thank everyone who posted on this thread for helping me get ready.Â* I did have a bit of overkill going in to the event in terms of preparedness but all that stuff was in a box, so what I didn't use, is there for next time.Â* 1 think I have to say is BRING WATER!!!Â* I went through a gallon jug and 6 liters of bottled water over 2 days!!Â* This doesn't count sodas and coffee.
