    RRE... recommended?

    Hey all,

I'm new to this forum. I recently moved in to L.A. and got my hands on a 2012 Evo X GSR. Needless to say, it's stock, and I definitely don't want to keep it that way So I went on Google in search of a tuner shop which I can call home for my new Evo here in L.A., and came across Road Race Engineering (RRE). As far as I can see, their website hasn't been updated in a while, however, I do see some positive feedback on these forums.

Would you guys recommend this shop? As I currently use the car for daily driving, it won't be heavily tuned (at least until I get another), but I still want it to run a tad better than stock. What would your recommendations be to start with (in terms of parts/chip tuning/etc)?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

RRE is a great, if not one of the best shops for Evos.

As for what to start with, start with research. I remember this guy who just bought and Evo VIII and spent $1000 on eBay for a "performance chip guaranteed 100-150 hp."

If you don't want to go overboard, the best bang for buck mods would be a drop in air filter, UICP, 3port boost controller, test pipe/high flow cat, and RRE's exhaust modification service. (as well as a tune).

You'll probably be more than happy with that power, as well as how the car sounds.

All the information you need can be found in the RRE subforum. If you want somebody to go over it with you, give RRE a call. I'm sure Mike would be more than happy to help you out.

www.roadraceengineering.com looks pretty up to date from my computer. The first story there is about the car listed on the SCE Home Page with the road test video here: http://www.socalevo.net/content/

The RRE Sub Forum: http://www.socalevo.net/forums/69-Road-Race-Engineering looks up to date.

    These all work:

What we do in what order for the EVO X GSR:

    EVOX GSR 350hp max goal

    Step One 300-320 WHP

    Cosworth Drop in filter $43
Real 3” Cat Back Exhaust $600-$800
Some kind of cat option $150-$280
3 Port Boost Control Solenoid $95 installed
    Tune $500

    ~$1400-$1750

    Step Two 340-350 WHP

    Install DP $ 40
Cosworth or Kelford Cams $975 installed
    Retune $200

    ~$2700

The turbo, injectors and fuel pump are all nicely at their limit. If you have a cat of some sort, stay with the stock DP.

Add E-85 to the above at any stage:

RC Engineering 1200cc Injectors $600 installed
Deatschwerks 65C Fuel pump and E-85 Fuel Line $250 installed

    E-85 TUNING
E-85 tuning Adds $100 to the original $500 tune if done at that time.
If adding E-85 to a $200 retune, then add an additional $200 for the second map.
If the car was already tuned on 91 and E-85, a retune for parts changes would be $300 total.

    Install Turbo and DP $700
    Deatschwerks Fuel Pump $150
    Install Pump and Kit $120
    Injector Dynamics 1100cc Injectors $495
    Install Injectors $ 60
    Retune $300

Beyond this, for more power you really really should be looking at pistons and rods. All the same things that make the EVO X make more power than the EVO 8/9 up to this point, will conspire against you beyond this point. Simply running E-85 at this power level will put you close to 500 WHP on the stock appearing turbos like the BBX. But there is nothing confidence inspiring about the combination of 400+ HP and the stock pistons and rods when you hold one in your hand.

Any of the above mods when combined with larger fuel injectors and an upgraded fuel pump will allow you to run E-85, but at 360 torque and 400-420 whp you are maxing out what the stock bottom end can safely take. All 2008 through 2013 EVO X GSRs have the ability to store two maps in the ECU. You can switch between these two maps easily with no additional hardware.

Launching the car with this power will kill the stock clutch pretty quick. Also launching will kill the cross pins in the center differential. It is really best if you don't launch the car. A clutch upgrade brings with it the possibility of a master cylinder failure. The Magnus Master Cylinder kit is the only one we suggest. Add a little over $2k for an ACT clutch, flywheel and Magnus EVO 9 master cylinder conversion installed. It costs about $375 parts and labor to upgrade the center differential pins with the transmission already out (during a clutch job). If you respect the stock clutch and have not yet launched the car, you can get away with the stock clutch for now.

The above prices take into consideration that you are getting the parts from us. We tune 8-10 EVOs a week so we get to see firsthand what parts work and what parts don't. We see what lasts and what companies give the best support if there is a problem. If you think the peanut galleries know more than us and you want to drag in parts from all corners of the internets, then the prices, service and results will vary. You take full responsibility for any parts that you supply.

RRE is top notch... I've had lots of work there and have never been disappointed.

KT Motoring in the Valley is also a great shop.

I would assume no one in the world has tuned more EVO Xs than RRE. Their track record is stellar and so is their support. They have helped me in good times and bad times and they have always had my back since 2008.

    Hey guys,

Many thanks for everyone's input, and a special thanks to Mike - was a pleasure to meet in person. Needless to say, I made an appointment and finally took my Evo to RRE today. And boy am I happy! I got a RRE intake w/ cat installed, installed boost solenoid, AEM intake, and had the car tuned. The way it sounds and drives now is absolutely amazing. And I only ended up spending ~$1600 at the shop (I managed to buy the intake on sale at a online shop and brought it in for install).

Count me as a noob, buy I couldn't ever hoped the performance boost would be so good... It's not much for some of you ofc, but my Evo pushed ~335 whp at the dyno and I can certainly tell you, there is a HUGE difference between a expertly tuned car and the stock version. I am definitely going to go with the proposed 350+ whp upgrades (cams, intercooler, downpipe), but will wait a bit on the more power option, at least, not until I get another daily driver.

Again, thanks all and I'll be def. seeing Mike and the guys @ RRE soon.
