Has anyone on here had to replace their timing chain?

I was told that I might need to get my timing chain replaced before i get a tune, due to the fact that i have 90k miles and the 08s' chains are infamous for stretching.. So I started doing research online and there's not really too many posts about getting the timing chain replaced, so I was (not safely) assuming that its not too much of a common problem? Has anyone had an issue with their timing chain? If so how big of a hole did the repair burn in your pocket??? I was just about to order a bunch of new parts to put on before my tune, buuut now i'm pretty nervous about this.. If anyone can help me out it'll be appreciated!

lol! there was a small amount where the timing chain would stretch. But no you do not have to get it replaced before getting a tune.

There is a relatively simple way to check if your timing chain has stretched beyond specification which involves taking off the valve cover. If you have have a warning message that reads ENGINE SERVICE REQUIRED you will also need to check your timing chain. We have seen a few cases of timing chain stretch, mostly involving 2008-2010 Evos, since the timing chain was updated for the 2011 models. Replacement of the timing chain is not a simple job, and a bit more involved than changing out at timing belt on the older 4G63 Evos. Expect to have your car down for about a day and have your timing chain relearned/reset.

I worded it wrong originally so I editted the post, but Robert at RRE was saying that they do see them stretch quite commonly with the 08-10s so its something that i should get checked out before tuning and end up having a catastrophic failure lol.. I just wanted to post this and see how commonly this happens.

The car will tell you when the chain is stretched. It has the ability... If you don't have a warning or anything, then you are fine for now.

Ive never really taking the valve cover off any car, is there any special procedure besides unbolting and lifting gently? What can I touch and what can I definitely not touch?

RRE has this 2 post in their blog about a timing chain. A customer had their engine damage due timing chain elongation. There was clear that lack of lubrication can cause this failure... So if you changed your oil at the right time with the recommended grade, you should be fine.

Dunno... looks like a common enough issue to me...

Like posted by evo_jfa above, lots of info on it and why and how and how to check or get it checked. It is smart to check it at 60k miles. Especially if modded and especially if planning on mods and super deluxe especially if you have 90k miles and are planning on doing a bunch of mods. like all things Mitsubishi, sometimes the systems all work as designed, sometimes not. We've had customers with a jumped or noisy floppy timing chain with no dash warning. Also some with the dash warning light on when everything checked out fine.
