    Smog Question Silicone Hoses

    Hi Guys,

So i just attempted to have my car Star Smog certified. Before even taking the car in the tech asked to see the engine and advised me that my Samco Silicone IC hoses would not pass the visual. I had read somewhere (i think a norcalevo thread) that these where exempt. If anyone could shed some light on this for me ide appreciate it. Otherwise i guess ill have to dig up my OEM hoses. Thanks

Intercooler pipes and intercoolers are suppose to be exempt on factory turbo'd vehicles.

check the manufacture information to check if they are CARB certified. I don't know if they are certified. Did you try another star smog center?

I checked Samco's website, which wasnt very helpful at all. I wanted to find out if this is legit or not before trying my luck again. I know i have the OEM hoses in storage so if i need to ill just swap em back for the test, im just trying to avoid having to go digging through all that crap if i dont have to.

    According to this... http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResource...ce%20Guide.pdf

Page 85, Intercooler does not need any CARB exempt checks. (assuming pipes are part of that)

Nah but they should be. My buddy just sold his evo 8 and he passed visual with some bright red hoses.

Thanks for that. I found the same thing but it only references intercooler not piping specifically.

Unfortunately for you unless you can dig up some documentation what they say goes. Why do you have to go to a star check? Did you fail before?

Assuming he have a 8 or 9, its past 6 years, some people get the request for STAR SMOG, while others don't. Its a hit or miss.

    Quick question...

But are you talking about intercooler piping or radiator hoses? Just realized you mentioned the intercooler, but then you were talking about hoses...

Interesting, I have an 8 and guess I'm one of the ones on the miss side. Mine looks stock outside of the AEM intake which we all know is legal.

Yep those are them, except mine are black. If it wasn't for the samco logos all over them I don't think he would have noticed.

I'm bringing it out of planned non operation. I don't know if that factors in or not, maybe I just hit the reverse lotto on this one.

Swapping out the couplers are not illegal. I'd recommend you simply go to another smog station or return the stock couplers on if you want to stay with that smog tech.

Take it to a different station, that tech obviously has no idea what he's talking about.

    To the OP:

STAR (test only) stations follow the state guidelines very strictly. That is because their entire business is smog cert centrict. If they were to lose their license, they would lose everything.

In answer to your question, yes, intercooler hoses/pipes and silicon vacuum lines "should" be cause for a visual fail. We can debate the validity of this until we're blue in the face, but it won't change the fact that you will be turned away.

The simplest thing for you to do is replace it with OEM parts and be done with it. Otherwise, you can try a few different stations and chat up the techs regarding the car. If they can feel you out to where they don't think you're part of the BAR, they may let you slide assuming it passes everywhere else.

    Good luck, man!
