    Bad batch of E85?

Went to fill up on E85 at Propel in Fullerton few weeks ago (specifically January 8th). Noticed something wasn't right when after filling up the car took about 10 tries to turn over. Drove the car home and seemed ok. The next day the car didn't seem to run right. The car would bog and experience hesitation with any kind of load when boost coming in at around 3k. Since then the car has always been giving me trouble starting up.

I let the car sit at home for a week until I was able to take it in to have it looked at. Turns out there was black gunk in the fuel system. Ran E85 straight for about 5000 miles until that day. Right now it's on pump gas and it's running ok as long as you stay under 3k RPMS. I'm hoping running pump gas clears the black gunk and goes back to normal. Some of the research I did said just run pump gas until it eventually clears. However, I can't seem to find anything on someone saying everything went back to normal after doing so.

Little info about my car: Evo X RC Engineering 1200 Injectors, DW Fuel Pump, exhaust, intake, uicp, and tune. Car has 17700 miles.

Has anyone experience this? If so did things eventually clear up after running pump gas?

Check your fuel pump/sock. I remember there were some X's with issues with the stock fuel sock degrading and clogging up the system with gunk. I've never run into this issue, and hopefully I won't. I was told that running a tank of 91 every so often will clean up the gunk build up from E85.

hmm i wanna pull my injectors to check now, because the ONLY e85 station that makes my car bog and idle funny 3 outta the 4 times I've been there is Fullerton Propel (actually most recent was 2 weeks ago and it acted up)...I usually fill up HB e85 and it drives fine again but I'll have to check. thanks for the heads up

I've had this problem in the past. I pulled off the o-rings and just soaked the injector tips in some seafoam for 10 minutes. Most of the stuff just dissolves right off but you can use a Q-tip to wipe away the excess. I've since added just a little bit of seafoam to every fill up (1 can for every 4 fill ups) and I haven't had a problem since.

Hmmm, that black gunk is a known issue running e85. However I dont think there was a solid explanation for it, other than the type of injector people used that caused it to build up. Other people say, they would switch to 91 every 3rd-4th fill which would clean out the injectors also.

As to certain stations having better results than other, I think it depends which station goes through the batches fastest. And Fullerton is a pretty busy station for OC. And they're all Propel.

jesus someones making real power. ive seen a few threads of the ID2000s having issues with gunk, wonder if their design doesnt allow the gunk to pass thru or something. http://forums.evolutionm.net/evo-eng...0s-unreal.html
i hate running 91 and last time i switched to cycle it, coincidentally my PERFECT car went to shit 2 days later when going back to e85 and needed a retune -_- im too pussy to run that seafoam thru my car as well, ill just have to get them cleaned and flow tested i guess..

Once in a while, add some chevron gas into your e85 to help clear out some gunk. The techron helps I heard

The black gunk seems unexplainable... I ran e85 2 years straight on my 9 on fic 1050s no gunk whatsoever filling at multiple different locations. On my 8 I ran e85 for a year on pte 1200s and they looked like complete crap with tar on all the tips...also multiple locations. Try the seafoam or techron... they actually work pretty well.

There is also something up with the Propel station E85 at least here in San Marcos. It definitely seems to have a different make up of compounds, than some of the other E85 stations around San Diego. We have some flex fuel vehicles and after using propel we were seeing 9mpg and boggy performance compared to 14 off of Pearson Fuels with no noticeable difference (on a 2009 ford e-series) LOL

During winter the content of ethanol can go as low as E70. That's why their pumps have a label that says minimum E70. I heard that during winter they use a different blend which is usually like E70-E80.

ive never had any issues and I've been running E85 since 2009. But I do switch to 91 occasionally to clean out the lines and stuff.

Not a bad batch of E85. E85 causes gummy build up over time. Solution is to run 91 through once a month.
