First time build suggestions evo 8

My EVO thru a rod bearing and ive decided to pull my motor and just rebuild it... looking to make 400-450Awhp. This will be my first motor build so im not quite sure on internal mods. Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated, any other parts to the build (motor wise) will also help out. Also if someone can suggest sizes of valves and pistons because im not quite sure how they work. Please and thanks.

    Manly valves (size??)
    arp headbolts
    Kelford 272/272 cams
    aem adjustable cam gears
    crower titanium springs and retainers
    eagle h beam rods
    Wiseco pistons (size??)

I think its best to contact a reputable evo shop such as massimo power, rre, tuning tech and go over with all of them your goals, budget, ideal setup for what you want the car to be used for, etc

400-450whp can be a fresh stock motor. If you are going for something in the 400s now and that will also be good to go for later in the mid 500s, then keep it simple. Wiseco or Manley pistons at .020" oversize. Manley rods, Stock crank or a Manley 2.3 crank for quicker spool and a bit more torque. No balance shafts and a fresh quality valve job.

You can put all the million dollar latest fashion parts parts in the motor and have it put together by a monkey and it wont last long. It seems like it is always the guys that have their motors put together by a guy that builds 1000 Supras or 1500 hp LS motors that have their shit come all apart. A good machinist and assembler could take parts from a couple junk yard motors and e-bay and make a monster motor that would last forever.

Do more of your research on who will be doing all the work and stress less about what parts exactly. Once you settle on your builder, then use the parts that they use and trust for what you are trying to acheive.

No one will really know until your motor is pulled and torn apart and inspected.

Maybe just a rod bearing needs to be replaced, maybe the crank can be polished and the rod is good, maybe the crank is dead and rod is dead, maybe the rod bolts stretched, nut came loose, rod cap came off and the crank knocked the disconnected rod out the side of the block, maybe the bearingless rod welded its self to the crank, snapped the rod off and the bloody stump sawed the block in half and the crank drop kicked the piston up into the valves and cylinder head, maybe.... It is a fun guessing game for the internet :-)

Mike Has a good point the best parts in the world wont fix engine assembly errors. My motor is also in need of a rebuild as the block is already .040 and needs to go another .040 to be fixed and from what i understand you cannot sleave these motors with any sucsess

Or you always have a chance of sending your core in and buying a built short block even long block but no really need for a build head as longest you have valvetrain, cams. Look into buschur, map or even evom.net some people have change of plans last min. You might find a good deal. Good luck. Oh another thing if your goal is 400hp then build that will hold 600whp+ because you always will want more power down the road.

Typically cheaper to have a local shop do it then send it across the country to get rebuilt. RRE has been doing evo's for a minute and i have seen quite a few cars built by them that are making some serious power.

My suggestion usually goes like this.

    1. find a shop familiar with your car
    2. Contact shop and tell them what your current and future plans are so that you will have a idea at to what they suggest.
    3. Find out price of parts, then typically double the quote cause things don't always go as planned and stuff adds up quick
    4. When you send in the motor/car the last but one of the most important. Have alot of patience and let the builders do their thing.
Give them a timeline but be flexable and realistic but the one thing you don't want to do is rush the builder/tuner
