Advice- need new tires DD/Canyon runs

Hi guys, I am in need of some new tires and I have been doing my best to look up threads regarding this. I have ventu evo v12s and I kinda hate them. They are 255/40/17 on stock bbs wheels. Before these I had the NT05 with the same size, and I fucking love them. I might go for those again, but I just wanted to know, compared to the NT05, if there is something comparable that you would reccommend. No Tracking, just DD, and canyon runs. I drive my car spirited when the situation permits or presents itself. I was possibly going to go with Michelin pilot super sports, although they dont offer it in 255 size.
The other question is, is it worth going to the 255 size overall? if i go back to the 235 stock tire size will I notice it. Is there a bigger footprint with that 255? Or even a 245 tire size, is that needed. When I put on the NT05s the car had kuhmo ecstas i think and they were stock size, so the nittos just looked amazingly wide and gave the car a very mean looking tire footprint.
Just curious what you guys think in regards to size, is it necessary to go bigger? and in regards to tires, when I have read about other reviews, people say how this tire was ok or that one was ok. I guess its hard to gauge that, so I am looking for advice on tires near the Nt05 or better than the evo v12s. Maybe its just me, but the moment I did my first canyon run on the evo v12s I was so dissappointed in my purchase. So if i need to break out in order to really enjoy my evo, then I will, just seeing if there is a tire choice that is relatively cheaper than a nt05 that will still allow me to get similar performance. Kinda sounds stupid as I read that last sentence, but maybe I will be surprised. Thanks for any advice.

If you're looking for a sticky, but DD friendly (read: more mileage) tire: ExtremeContact DW if budget is tight, Pilot Super Sport if you have a bit more to work with.

If you're looking for the most grip you can get/will ever need out of a reasonable street tire, and are willing to sacrifice some wear: RS3 or Rival S both are great sticky tires with still reasonable wear, or the newer RE71R. No personal experience with the RE71R, but people say it's stickier than the RS3, but wear is much worse.

I didn't like the NT05, it sacrificed a ton of wear for not a lot more grip. You'd be better off getting a longer lasting tire like the ExtremeContact DW or PSS which grips almost as much while lasting much much longer, or jumping all the way to the extreme street tires.

If you can deal with the life of a NT05, try out the RS3 or Rival S.

Thank you for the reply. I am most likely going to go pss from costco, i van get the 235/45s for 608$ out the door. Or the 245s for another 100$ but i dont see it being worth it.

Given the what they'll be used for, i'd go for the PSS. They really do everything well, and although they won't be as fast as the aforementioned Extreme category street tires, they will be great in the wet, have better road manners and last longer.

As for sizing, 235/45/17 is going to work best on a 8" wheel, especially if you don't use a tire with a stiff sidewall, and you want the best handling you can get out of the tire.

I couldn't see a 255 V12 on a 8" wheel working very well. That tire has a pretty soft sidewall, and when you stick it on too narrow of a wheel it just makes it collapse that much easier.

I'm using stock 8" wheels too and decided on the BFG Rivals. Choices were 225 or 245. I went with the 225s because they turn in better and offer better feel and response vs. having a tire that is a little too fat.

FWIW, i was running 225 RS3s on 9" wheels on my Miata, and that was purely because that is what works best. The RS3 is a little softer carcass so it really benefits from triangulating the sidewall against the wheel like that.

Thanks for the reply yo. The nitto 255s were fucking unbeleivable imho. But they def didnt last that long, and if I wasnt so worried about money i would just break out for those. I just saw a set of 4 nt05s on cl for 550, im gonna shoot him an offer and see if i can get them a bit cheaper. But the nt05s at that 255 were so predictable and reliable and just stuck. And that is the reason i went with the v12s as a 255, but tbh they dont look as wide as the nt05 255s. I dunno, i just really enjoyed those nittos. I have been told by others that they are just too much for a daily, but i like knowing that im safe especially the way i drive. Plus, i could care less about the wet driving, cuz it almost never rains here in the sfv, and the nt05 was pretty surprising in the rain even tho it doesnt get the best wet rating. Just love that tire. And its hard to want to trust another Hankook tire after feeling like i got gyped on the v12s.

I just picked up the pilot super sports and MAN am I happy with them! Right away I felt a difference in comfort and noise, and trust me in a evo 9 every little bit counts in that department lol. I had ran the falken azenis rt615k previously, they were amazing in handling but didnt last long (200 treadware i didnt expect much). The super sports handle just as good! I will definitely buy again but they are a pretty penny. i scored mine for a good deal, just gotta price haggle! Good luck!

Coll man. Thanks for the heads up. 608$ out the door aint too bad. Plus, costco has amazing warranty and they are cheaper than everywhere on this particular tire. Theres a place locally called tires buy mark, and i been getting tires here for the last 22yrs and noones been cheaper, not even for my trucks tires and the company i work for can get a deal on them, and tires buy mark is still cheaper than that "deal". Anyway, point is, costco came thru.
Hey, by the way, can anyone recommend an alignment shop in the san fernando valley. Is there a need for any kind of specialty alignment shop for the evo?

Best alignment i've had was from West End in Gardena. It was a bit of a hike for me, but the quality of their work and customer service made it absolutely worth it. If you want to get the most out of your setup, they'll do that. Or if you just want a really good alignment, they'll do that. It's pretty easy to fudge the numbers on these newer alignment racks, but these guys do it all old school and it comes out dead nuts perfect. http://www.yelp.com/biz/west-end-alignment-gardena

I'm running a set of RE-11A (predecessor to RE-71R). They do wear out really fast if you're using them for HPDEs but other than that they're great. They get really "vocal" before you lose grip. First "good" set of tires I've had so I can't really compare them to anything else.
