    Reese tuning or Dr Boost?

So I'm trying to decide where I should go for my turbo install and tune? Ive heard about Reese tuning and is aware of their past. I've had a friend tune by dr boost and have heard mix reviews. I've actually stopped by and talked to both tuners. Dr boost garage looks like a mess! I don't feel comfortable leaving my car there looks like a chop shop. Reese I've heard is doing more subi and couple of euros but his past is what's keeping me away. Both seems to be very knowledgeable about tuning evo 10s. Also found out both do not like each other lol. I don't have the time to drive up north and get it done at rre, 5150, etc. any advice would be very helpful.

Honestly I personally would choose Dr Boost any day. But that is me. Since you went to each shop and talked to them I commend you for that. I just couldn't trust someone with that kind of past. Business ethics I take very seriously and I would not spend my money with someone like that. Furthermore, there is HGMS near Sorrento Valley they tune and work on evos. They aren't cheap but you were complaining about a dirty shop and HGMS is like a laboratory. In the end you get what you pay for.

I would highly recommend a professional detail though that would ensure your vehicle always looks its best and when I am done it looks better than brand new. My garage is clean and organized lol.

I realize that RRE is further than you want, but relatively speaking, we are spoiled here in Socal with all the options, and in other parts of the country people would be grateful to only have to drive that far. People have gone and will continue to go much further for good service. I realize that you are probably super busy with life stuff where cars are not the highest priority, and i can appreciate that, but that 1.5-2 hour drive may save you a lot of time in the long run just by dealing with a shop that you can trust not to screw around. So far i've yet to see anybody who can match them overall.

I have heard good things about HG but haven't used them personally. I think Reese is a talented guy, but yeah i'd be a bit uncomfortable too.

Thanks for the reply. I went to RRe for my e85 tune and have had good a experience. I had to take a couple of days off from work and made it a 4 day weekend. I'm still doing research and reading some of the reviews and it seems like both have their positives and negatives.

I'll recommend one thing to consider before going any tuner, have your care more close to 100% as possible. If you have multiple things to install and fix, go with the one you feel better to work with your car first. I'll take this approach:

    - If you part installation shop is different than you tuner pic. Ask your tuner if you can drive with the new part installed. most of the time you can without boost and not a very long distance.
a - Yes. Drive to your favorite tuner. Consider 1 additional money for mechanic inspection to fix if something is wrong.
b -No drive. plan all on one shop and be there to inspect work done.

    - If you tuner and shop is on the same place. Just consider possibility for 2 days on the shop in case part installation take longer than expected

If you want to see a clean shop, go with HGMS. I saw a youtube video and looks like a lab.

Admittedly those of us living in the heart of Orange County have it good compared to many others. Easy access to E85 and half a dozen great shops within an hour's drive who specialize in Evos. I love being able to drive up to RRE and asking insightful (aka dumb) questions about my car whenever I want.

Every shop has its pros and cons, though some more pros than other shops. Ask what shop to go to and you will get a list of the usual suspects. Another aspect to consider is how shops handle things when problems come up and your level of tolerance to travel a long distance if you need to do a followup.

I would just take time off to drive to OC or LA to get stuff done. The stories I hear about SD shops scare me off. I think HG motorsports is sorta meh...they may be good with exotics, but they seem to be lost with tuning evo's.

Someone posted a review/experience with HG here a few years back and it sounded like a nightmare. Long story short, tune was bad, RRE fixed it.

If you have a IX and want a 'nasty' street machine (but don't mind the very long wait) then go with Dr Boost. He specializes in VIII/IX. Its a father and son operation and they both own EVOs so that's saying something about what they like doing. They're busy and the parking lot is filled with EVOs (and other makes) for a good reason.

If you own a X and want a mix of power/reliability (but don't mind the 1.5hr drive) then go with RRE. They work on 5-8 X's every week. The owner actually turned me down for additional mods/tune because he said it would compromise the car's reliability until I save enough for a block build.

I chose RRE because reliability was more important than ultimate power. I never had to bring my car back to them for any issues.

Better do some research before you choose or else you end up like the people in the post I just read on a few other sites.
