New member with EVO X MR coming from 2G DSM AWD

    Hello,

My name is Alex AK, I live in LA (Tarzana) and moved here from Toronto Canada 6 years ago.
I'm also a member on CLUB DSM CANADA and still own 2G DSM (Eagle Talon TSi AWD).
Recently i purchased EVO X MR 2014 and been driving it daily and DSM on weekends.
I do my own work and tuning on my cars.

Looking forward to local meets and talk EVOs/DSMs :)

    Thank you

Thank you, good to be here!

Here is the pic of my MR. It's fairly fresh and factory stock.

I also own a DSM (for last 11 years). This thing has been modded and fairly fast street car.

Very cool, my brother had a 1g Talon which is what got me into DSMs and then Evos. Yours looks a lot cleaner than his ever did.

I think EVOs stock are a bit slow, at least for me after driving DSM with 27-30psi. They seemed to drop boost on top end which drives me crazy.
Currently i'm entertaining an idea to drop off my MR at RRE (RoarRaceEngineering) and have them do their magic (the easy way but expensive).
I think it would feel right having at least solid 300AWHP on pump gas and no drop in boost towards high rpm.
Currently i have AEM intake and cat-back on MR.

Thanks, DSMs are like EVOs except they are 2 door looking like sports cars instead of rally cars :)
Mine has a lot of EVO parts including:
    - EVO III 5th gear and EVO I 1-4th gear set
    - EVO III Intake Manifold
    - EVO III Turbo manifold
    - EVO III O2 Housing
    - EVO 8 Brembos, rotors, and factory enkei wheels

That's true with the 7/8/9 as well, the turbos really seem to die in power after about 6krpms. Not sure how well just a tune will be able to dial out some of that, the surefire method is a bigger turbo. Even something like the FP Green should hold boost without much drop out to redline.

Is the Talon on gas or e85? Seems like you probably have a lot going on with it if you're running 27-30psi through it. A stock Evo definitely doesn't compare to that feeling.

I have ECM Link with flex fuel setup (GM ethanol sensor). Entire fuel system has been upgraded including fuel lines, filter, injectors, and fuel pump. I mix gas and e85 (usually keeping at least 40% ethanol) and she loves it. I can do pulls to a red line with zero knock.

Regarding EVO X, i strongly believe stock turbo can do much more. The drop in boost is very likely due to how factory boost map is configured.

The stock turbo definitely has a lot more potential, especially on straight E85 or flex fuel. But ultimately, the design of the stock turbo really puts an emphasis on response and mid range power instead of top end.

Regarding MR SST which i really like. Has there been any new software tools that allow altering clutch pack pressure in Normal/Sport modes?

I didn't know that with the X turbo. There wasn't too much more that could be done for the VIII or IX I thought to keep boost flat out to redline. I guess with the IX turbo it wouldn't drop off as much, but it still would.

You are unrealistic if you think the stock X turbo will hold flat boost all the way to redline. Well maybe if you stick to 19 psi. But a turbo's compressor maps will tell you exactly where it is efficient. And at 23 or 24 psi at 7k rpm, the X turbo is definitely not efficient. What you should be seeing is somewhere between 18-19 psi by redline. Any more than that and you'll just end up producing more heat than power.
